An Inspired Chat with Arindam Dasgupta Ph.D.

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Arindam Dasgupta Ph.D.. Check out our conversation below.

Arindam , a huge thanks to you for investing the time to share your wisdom with those who are seeking it. We think it’s so important for us to share stories with our neighbors, friends and community because knowledge multiples when we share with each other. Let’s jump in: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day for me is a balance between my full-time role and my photography business. During the day, I focus on my professional work, and in the evenings or on weekends, I dedicate time to photography. That includes collaborating with clients, editing photos, preparing for upcoming exhibitions, and delivering finished photo products. It’s a busy schedule, but I genuinely enjoy both aspects of my work and find that they complement each other creatively and intellectually.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Arindam Dasgupta, a portrait and fine art photographer based in the Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia area. Photography has always been more than a creative outlet for me—it’s a way to connect with people and tell their stories through light, emotion, and expression.

What makes my work unique is the blend of precision and artistry that comes from my dual background. By day, I work in a highly analytical field, and that attention to detail naturally carries over into my photography—whether I’m creating a timeless black-and-white portrait, capturing a dancer in motion, or composing a landscape at golden hour.

Over the years, I’ve photographed families, professionals, artists, and travelers from all walks of life. I also enjoy exhibiting my work through local galleries such as the Montgomery County Art Association’s Goldman Art Gallery, Kensington Armory, Oasis art gallery and Windridge vineyards gallery where my images have been displayed alongside other talented artists.

Right now, I’m focused on expanding my portrait portfolio—particularly lifestyle and dance photography—and preparing new pieces for upcoming exhibitions. My brand, Arindam Dasgupta Photography, is built on the belief that every person has a story worth capturing with care, authenticity, and artistry.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world told me who I had to be, I was simply a curious observer — someone who loved to explore, notice details others might overlook, and find beauty in everyday moments and ask questions. I was the kid who could get lost watching light shift through a window or who felt fascinated by the way people express emotion through small gestures.

That curiosity eventually shaped two parallel paths in my life: one rooted in science and structure, and the other in art and storytelling. Even as I built a career in a technical field, that creative spark never left. Photography became my way of staying true to that original version of myself — the one who saw the world not as a set of expectations, but as an endless series of moments waiting to be understood and captured.

In many ways, my journey as a photographer is about returning to that early sense of wonder and authenticity. It’s about seeing beyond the roles and labels — and rediscovering the joy of observing, creating, and connecting.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have definitely been moments when things got challenging — balancing a demanding full-time career with the dedication that photography requires isn’t always easy. There were times when deadlines, long hours, or creative fatigue could have made it tempting to step back.

But giving up was never an option for me. Photography isn’t just something I do; it’s a part of who I am. It gives me perspective, balance, and a sense of purpose that complements my professional life. Whenever I’ve faced challenges — whether it was learning new techniques, managing time between work and art, or navigating the ups and downs of running a creative business — I’ve reminded myself why I started: the joy of creating something meaningful and connecting with people through images.

Every obstacle has pushed me to grow, refine my process, and stay true to my passion. So while I’ve had my challenges, quitting has never crossed my mind. If anything, those moments reinforced how deeply I value what I do.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
My friends would probably say that what matters most to me is connection and authenticity. I care deeply about the people I photograph and the stories behind each image. Whether it’s a portrait, a dancer, or a family moment, I want it to feel real and personal.

They’d also say I’m someone who’s both creative and disciplined — balancing my analytical career with my passion for photography. I’m always learning, growing, and striving to create images that make people feel seen and valued.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
If I knew I had 10 years left, I’d stop worrying about things that don’t truly matter. I’ve never been one to dwell on the past — I’ve always believed in looking forward and finding meaning in what’s ahead. Life moves quickly, and I’d want every moment to count.

I’d focus more on creating, connecting, and experiencing. I’d spend even more time behind the camera, telling stories that move people and capturing the beauty in everyday life. I’d travel more, share more, and be fully present with the people I care about.

In many ways, I already try to live that way — but knowing time was limited would make me even more intentional about chasing what brings joy and leaving behind anything that doesn’t.
