An Inspired Chat with Evie Chang of East Bay

We recently had the chance to connect with Evie Chang and have shared our conversation below.

Evie, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day consists of getting up, doing my morning hygiene and self care ritual, and then checking on my plants and pottery before heading off to work. I’ve been really into keeping carnivorous plants lately, so its always really fun to go outside and see if anyone caught anything overnight!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Evie Chang, and I am the artist behind mudmonsterclayworks. My ceramics practice is dedicated to making pieces that inspire a sense of wonder and whimsy in my audience! Outside of my ceramics practice, I’m also a cosplayer, fashion designer, and a model.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
This is an interesting question, honestly I think it was the opposite for me. My parents were immigrants who worked hard to give me and my sister opportunities, and so my entire life I was being told who I had to be – cautious, smart, successful. I was discouraged from practicing art because my parents feared it was a distraction from the things they thought would sustain me in the future, mainly studying hard and getting good grades. I think before I let myself become who I am, I really felt like a shell of a person! Now I am more myself – creative, obsessive, wild – but the things I was told to be still live in me too.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
I think the fear of dissapointing others has held me back the most. I am a bit of a chronic people pleasure, so this is not surprising. But I always hesitate to act when I am unsure how my actions might dissapoint others, even when I know it is the right thing for me. This is something I’m actively trying to change!

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
I think so. Honestly, I’m not sure I could even pretend to be anyone else.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If immortality were real, what would you build?
The thoughtful answer is: a school, or some other institution from which to keep and share knowledge. I’d like to make sure the things I have worked hard to learn do not go forgotten.

The silly answer is: a sick underwater base. This is assuming immortality saves me from drowning, so I wouldn’t have to worry about drowning on my way in and out of said base.
