Story & Lesson Highlights with Wendy Scroggins of Dallas, TX

We recently had the chance to connect with Wendy Scroggins and have shared our conversation below.

Wendy, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
Complete chaos with my 2, and 3 year old lol

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
We are a bridal and evening designer that focuses on custom pieces. We started in 2016 and have been in our Bedford location since. It’s pretty simple but all of our dresses are customizable. Every dress made in our Dallas flagship store is made in the customer’s custom sizing instead of a standard size. We are also a full service custom salon that offers in house customizations.

I just started our Elizabeth Lee Studio where all the dresses are made in Texas. We have just launched the Mia collection (Made in America) in August. It’s been a fun journey to make dresses here locally.

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I was unwanted and despised because I was a girl because of my culture (Chinese). I was told girls are not as important and valuable as boys. I believe we are all made in the image as God and we are equal. My husband and I actually work together. I do not believe marriage is a competition or we have to compete and compare constantly but a partnership that compliments each other. My husband is my biggest encourager and I am his. I am beyond blessed to work with my best friend everyday.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I had post postpartum depression since I had my first child in 2018. I had severe anxiety that often paralyzed me. My condition improved but I had suicidal thoughts in 2023 after having my beautiful daughter. But God healed me. I am no longer depressed and no longer suicidal. I feel such gratitude daily that it drives me to the point of tears for the life I get to live because of God. For those who are suffering depression or sever anxiety, I want you to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My friend John and Erin are probably two of my most admired people. In 2014, their beautiful one year old daughter passed away from an aggressive brain cancer. I was in the hospital room right after. Erin was holding her baby and then she started worshiping with a guitar. John knelt down when they took her body away and uttered these words I will never forget, God even in death, I will trust you because you are worthy. That moment in the hospital room, I witnessed strength, faith amid of deverstating grief. Even though we have lived in different countries since, I have followed up with their journey. Now they have 4 beautiful children and live a very happy life. It taught me that I could trust God even in my worst moments.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
Nothing. Is that crazy? I feel called to start and build Elizabeth Lee. I love what I do and the people I do it with. I work with my husband Jared and my manager Theresa is my best friend. I want to see my employees grow and flourish. And I love working with our retailers across the country and love working with brides. I also get to design dresses! Believe it or not, it’s really fun. We have been in the business since 2016, but I feel we are just getting started.

I love being a mom and wife. I enjoy spending time with my 3 babies and Jared. I know I cannot be a stay home mom, so being a working mom is what I have chosen. It took a long time to get past the guilt. But I know walking in my calling is not just the best for me but also for my family.
