Mychel Sullivan shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Mychel, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Making art has always made me lose track of time, and I love it. Sometimes I have a hard time staying focused but when I’m in my creative zone I can stay glued to an art project for hours at a time, even through hunger and fatigue. Expressing myself visually gives me a sense of direction in life. So when I’m lost it’s usually because I’m getting off course as an artist.
Art is my compass in life.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Mychel and I’m a graphic artist. These days I’m busy designing and creating my own brands, while starting to focus more on the business side of art. But as an artist, whether I’m working with paint, digital tools, mixed media, clothing or just trying something totally new, I always create from instinct and curiosity. I’ve been my own teacher since day one and I still have a lot left to learn. Thanks for being here and checking out what I do.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
Before the world *tried to tell me who to be, I was exactly who I am today. In first grade, I remember when everyone else got in groups for art class I always worked alone. Not because I didn’t get along with my classmates, I just didn’t want them coloring outside my lines. Back then I also used to tell my mom how I was going to draw on all the walls in my house when I “grew up”. Looking at myself then and now, I’m definitely still the same person.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering has helped me develop patience, resilience, courage, and strength, which are all needed to properly handle success. I believe every storm we go through in life ultimately makes us stronger, and that there’s always a lesson to learn in every failure or loss.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
To keep it very simple, my ultimate mission in life is to use the talents and gifts God blessed me with to bring glory to his name.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
Even without praise I would still give my best at everything I do, because I’m my own biggest fan and my own harshest critic. A lot of great artists in history weren’t praised while they were still living, but that didn’t stop them from creating. Timeless art isn’t fueled by approvals and co-signs, it’s fueled with passion.
