We’re looking forward to introducing you to Harry Guest. Check out our conversation below.
Harry, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Who are you learning from right now?
As you hone your voice in the filmmaking space it’s really crucial to find inspiration. I’ve been watching and learning from some of the filmmakers that inspire me, both on and off set.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m a British born, LA local, screenwriter and director. I have multiple projects in development in the UK and US and continue to hone my short form work too across commercials, music videos and factual content.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
I was knocking on doors in London to find some way into the film industry and I eventually got an internship at Ealing Studios. It was a small development role that saw me reading submitted scripts and writing reports, to share with the head of development. In those four weeks I got to meet a lot of people who were making movies for a living and it made it all seem possible. Working parallel and being close to the thing you thought was a pipeline dream made it all seem real, possible.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Everything works out in the end, just enjoy the ride and keep moving forwards, and do what you love!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
You have to live your life outside of your ‘work.’ If all you do is work, how can you have experiences that could inform your writing and your world view?
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
My work and career is not within the normal bounds of what those around me were doing as I was growing up, so I am definitely doing something that I felt destined, not pushed to do.
