Jaelan Mitchell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Jaelan, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
What makes me lose track of time is following other creators and seeing how they are pushing the needle. I like to be inspired everyday. Finding new ways to keep my brain growing and learning. I don’t want to ever feel stagnant or feeling too comfortable in any part of my life or career. I enjoy standing out in ways to show people that it is cool. Sure the certain unwanted attention comes around but I just try to stay focus on the outcoming than what other nonsense comes in. Another thing that helps me kill time but keep my mind active is reading, I’m not the biggest reader and if a book can’t capture me with the first 30 pages I pretty much never look at that book again. Recently, the books that I have chosen has help me mentally grow in ways that I would have never thought of. I use that time reading and learning to be such a vital part of my relationships I nurture to now. Which has been fruitful so far.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Jaelan Mitchell, I am a photographer raised in Prince George’s County, Maryland. I am what some would label a statistic. I come from a single parent household, I grew up an only child (having siblings on my father side). I feel like my brain was always wired as a creative. Traditional school was never a big thing for me, As a kinesthetic learner, sitting and class was the toughness thing for me. I had to make up very creative games that my mother would make for me to understand lessons and what was going on in class. My background in sports was very much the opposite I excelled in basketball. An injury which pivoted me to Photography/Visual arts. 5 years later, officially an LLC business, self-taught, and done every event know to the photography industry. Sports, concerts, cooperate headshots, events, lifestyle, bts, and etc. Which I feel makes me one of the most unique photographers coming out right now.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
The most memorable moment for me was when I made the discission to take a gap year to pursue my dream with music and photography. I think I really surprised myself. I came to my mother with a plan and wrote time stamps and all. I think she could kind of see how serious I was with something and believe in me with the process. Which was a very powerful moment for me.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of peoples opinions, I cared too much about what the people that kind of knew me thought of me instead of embracing those who actually liked my art. I wanted everyone to like what I made or what I was doing. I felt like I got no dislike what I was doing was no good. Overtime, I did start to come out with no caring and just doing and see what sticks. It has been change for the better. Much more freedom from my own self doubts. Also, help me create my own lane, foundation and look to help me stand out from the rest even more.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a cultural value you protect at all costs?
The cultural value anyone should protect is being true to yourself. We’ve all had or still have people in our lives that we don’t grow or benefit from. It should never be a one side of the coin only thing. You have to cut off dead branches for your tree to grow. You have to throw out the bad fruit so it doesn’t make the other fruit go bad. It can be difficult but you find much more peace in your life that way. You might be reading this and say “he’s just saying that” nah I’m a testament of it. Being yourself only helps attract people who are for YOU and you only. Whether your different religion, culture, status, tax bracket, etc. It doesn’t matter, the universe bring what you deserve if you are doing the work.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
When I get everything on my weekly list done early & when I right everything out that I have to get done.
