Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Jon Huck of Hollywood

We recently had the chance to connect with Jon Huck and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jon, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: When have you felt most loved—and did you believe you deserved it?
Everyone deserves to be loved. I feel most loved between 3:30 and 5 every morning. My cat gets real chatty. That’s when she likes to be fed. If you need to be loved – go get a cat. Nothing but love. And probably some scratches to your face if you don’t get up in time to feed them. But also love.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Actor, comedian, writer, producer, petter of cats, listener of music and watcher of baseball – My name is Jon Huck. I am a story telling half-wit originally from the Midwest, currently residing in Los Angeles. I bring to the table that which no other mortal human can bring – Myself. Apologies in advance but one way or another – I end up in everything I do.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Both my parents are/were amazing. I’m grateful for the storytelling skills I gained from my Dad but my Mom saw who I was before I even considered it. When I was a kid she was always supportive. Whenever I did anything, from guitar recitals to middle school plays, she was always encouraging me. When I moved out to LA I was directionless – I’m that rare breed of idiot who moves out here with zero plan. But she was the one who suggested I try stand up comedy. She knew how much I loved it and she knew I had that in me. When that led to me getting into acting she was right there – at every screening and premiere, and watching every TV show I’ve been fortunate enough to do. She’s pretty solid.

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Don’t worry about what other people think or say about you. Other peoples opinions of you are none of your business. Let people talk, speculate and hypothesize about what you’re up to. Just keep moving forward. Try to be a better person every day and everything else will work itself out. You’re gonna be fine.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
My friends. The people I grew up with and met in college that I am still in touch with – I admire them for their character. They make everyone around them better. They are kind, patient, loyal and hilarious. The kind of people you want to have a beer with. They support me no matter what I’m doing. True friends are rare and irreplaceable.

Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I recently heard something that has stuck with me – “how you do anything is how you do everything”. I think that’s true. When I was half-assing jobs I didn’t have any desire to do I was also half-assing my life around those jobs – my relationships, my social obligations, my dreams… Nothing was going to stick if I kept going through life like that. Now I try and do everything to the best of my ability – I really focus on the task at hand and try to be present for it, whatever it is – from cleaning my bathroom to acting. Being present helps me focus on what I’m doing and at the same time frees up my mind to be more creative.
