Melanie Pensak of Maryland on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Melanie Pensak. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Melanie, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What do you think is misunderstood about your business?
People often think they can’t meditate, inside or outside, because their mind is busy. Everyone has many thoughts passing through their mind everyday, so a busy mind is perfect for practicing meditation! Lots of thoughts = lots of opportunity to practice.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My newly published book, Love for the Land, helps people develop a deeper connection with the land and beings where they live through meditation, mindfulness, art, ritual, and history. I find in my work many people feel lonely and disconnected in our high-tech times, and spending intentional time with the Earth, plants, animals, and people is an intentional path back to feeling more alive. Love for the Land, which is a handbook for developing peace and connection in challenging times.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
My mother died suddenly when I was 18, and it made me aware of how quickly life can change. Being present with those you love and finding joy in the everyday is quite important. Learning these lessons at a young age have made me appreciate being alive and time in the natural world for healing sadness, grief, and disconnection.

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
I used to believe that I had to be perfect to be loved. Through surviving a serious illness I realized I am lovable in all situations.

Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I hope they would say I value quality conversations, being present, and finding the beauty in each day, no matter the circumstances.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
Melanie loved life and the wonders of the Earth. She lived for inspiring others to see the beauty in the everyday.
