Dr. Dana Edwards shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Dana, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Something that has brought me joy outside of work recently is slowing down my days and living in the present. Sometimes as humans, we spend our days wondering about what is coming next or our future endeavors. I’m working on living in the moment and putting myself first. I have found joy slowing down my days by watching my favorite shows, relaxing, and talking to friends/family.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Greetings! My name is Dana Edwards and I am a children’s book author located in Spartanburg, SC. I created my business entitled, The Counselor’s Cabinet, LLC. I create children’s books that give feelings a voice. Each story teaches children positive coping skills to deal with anger, self-esteem, career exploration, etc. Ultimately, I want to create a collection of work where diverse children can see themselves in each book and increase their social, emotional, career, and academic development.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My father taught me about hard work and perseverance regarding a career. I witnessed my dad work over 28 years in the school system and constantly change the lives of countless students. He always showed up for his students and developed a reputation of being dependable. He taught me that you’re only as good as your word. I have kept that saying as a mantra throughout my career. I try to emulate his teachings by showing up for my students daily, being dependable, and showing my heart. I feel like it has made me a better employee, co-worker, and counselor!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one thing to my younger self, I would tell her to live her life unapologetically for herself. Don’t be afraid to try new things, enjoy the moment, and let go of relationships that no longer suit you.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
I think my friends would say that meaningful relationships, true joy, and stability matter most to me. It’s the simple things in life and pure intention of others.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. What will you regret not doing?
I would regret not traveling and experiencing various cultures, foods, and perspectives. I believe that traveling makes you a well-rounded person and open minded.
