We caught up with the brilliant and insightful DeeDee Hawk a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
DeeDee , thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I am an Energy Alchemist—and when I reflect on my life, I realize I’ve always been one.
An Energy Alchemist, as it applies to Hawk Healing Hands, is someone who listens beyond words and transforms the unseen. I work with energy the way a sculptor works with clay—shifting heaviness into harmony, chaos into calm, and disconnection into understanding. Whether it’s between people and their animals or within someone’s own spirit, I help alchemize energy into alignment.
When I was a child, my parents bought a horse. I constantly asked them to saddle him so I could ride, until one day my mom—busy in the kitchen—told me I could ride if I could saddle him myself. Those words lit something up in me.
I ran outside, found the horse, and explained what I was about to do. He listened. I managed to get the bridle on after several tries, then faced the next challenge: lifting the saddle. It was far heavier than I imagined. I dragged it, hoisted it up the steps by our burn barrels, and failed over and over again—each time the horse moving or the saddle slipping to the ground. But I kept talking to him, asking him to stand still, trusting he understood me. Eventually, he did. The saddle stayed. I buckled it in place, climbed on, and rode proudly past the kitchen window to show my mom what I had done.
That day shaped how I approach everything in life and business. I learned that success comes through curiosity, communication, and perseverance—through trial and error. Not everything works the first, second, or even third time. But there’s always a glimmer, a small piece that does. I’ve learned to notice that spark and build from it until it becomes something whole.
As for being the only one in the room who looks like me—this has always been my reality. I am an entrepreneurial Navajo woman. Unless the Pow Wow is in town, I often stand alone in that way. In school, I was the only Native American in my class. In my career, the only Native woman in the room. It could feel lonely at times, but I learned to move through it with grace and quiet confidence.
Along the way, I’ve had to correct myths—like that all Native Americans go to college for free (we don’t), that we’re “savages” (we aren’t), or that we’re extinct (we’re thriving). I see those moments as opportunities to educate, not defend. My presence itself is an act of reclamation.
Being the only one in the room taught me how to stay rooted in who I am, no matter the environment. I don’t blend in—I bring my medicine with me.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m the founder of Hawk Healing Hands, based in Austin, Texas. I am a Medium Psychic, Energy Alchemist, and Animal Communicator. I help people and their animals find peace, clarity, and healing through intuitive connection and energetic transformation.
What makes my work special is that it’s not about performance—it’s about remembrance. Every person and animal already carries the answers they’re seeking; I simply help them hear it. Whether I’m communicating with a beloved pet, offering an energy healing session, or guiding someone through a personal intuitive reading, my focus is always on transformation that feels grounded, gentle, and real.
Hawk Healing Hands was born from a calling to merge intuition with action. My sessions are available both online and mobile throughout Central Texas, serving Austin, Cedar Park, Round Rock, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Liberty Hill, and Jonestown. I also offer virtual sessions via Zoom for clients anywhere in the United States. Clients often describe the experience as calm, validating, and life-changing—not because I give them something new, but because I help them reconnect with what’s always been there.
This year has been full of growth. I’ve been featured in Voyage Austin and podcasts like Clairvoyaging and Conversations with the Ancients. Hawk Healing Hands has also expanded its presence through vendor events such as the World Oddities Expo and The Night Owl Spirit Social, where I offered mini animal communication sessions, energetic healings, and personal intuitive readings.
One of my newest offerings is the 3-Minute Meditation, created for busy people who need to find calm fast—like someone preparing for a speech at work, a parent transitioning from work to home life and needing a few minutes of peace before dinner and the nighttime routine, or a student gathering focus before a big test. Three minutes is all you need to find your center.
What excites me most is watching people remember their own power—the moment they realize the healing isn’t coming from me, but through them. That realization changes everything.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, the three qualities and skills that have had the greatest impact on my journey are curiosity, discipline, and self-investment.
Curiosity has always been my compass. Whatever new challenge is in front of me, I do my research, think creatively, and face it with facts and a willingness to learn. There’s power in being resourceful—especially when you don’t yet have all the answers.
Discipline shaped me during my years in the workplace. I was the person who woke up before dawn, went to CrossFit, and arrived at the office prepped and ready before most people had their first cup of coffee. That habit of showing up early—to my goals, my health, and my dreams—has carried into my business and life today.
And finally, self-investment is the quality I value most. For me, investing in myself looks like CrossFit workouts, high-protein meal prepping, taking walks with my dog, getting a good night’s rest, journaling, spending time with my guides and ancestors, enjoying coffee on the porch swing while listening to nature, dedicating time to my business and clients, having dinner with friends, and creating quiet moments for myself. All of it nourishes my energy so I can show up fully for others.
For those early in their journey, my advice is simple but powerful: write down what you want your daily routine to include. Decide how much time you can devote to each part and commit to it. Be flexible, but stay consistent. Small, intentional habits add up to transformation.
And one last piece of practical wisdom—meal prepping is a game changer. I prep three days of lunches and dinners at a time, and it saves me every time I’m tired or “hangry.” It’s not glamorous, but it’s a form of self-respect that fuels everything else you want to build.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
My biggest area of growth in the past 12 months has been trusting myself and my process—and holding firm to my boundaries.
When I launched Hawk Healing Hands, I had to learn how to blend intuition with structure—how to follow my inner guidance while also building systems, processes, and limits that protect my energy. At one point, I was even asked to put my business on hold so I could be a source of support for someone else. I agreed at first, but eventually realized that in dimming my own light, I was losing both momentum and myself. When I began creating boundaries, the friendship ended—but the lesson remained. My purpose isn’t meant to be paused.
This past year has taught me that boundaries aren’t walls—they’re doors that open in the right direction. Protecting my time and energy allows me to serve with more presence and integrity.
I’ve also grown in my ability to let things unfold naturally instead of rushing results. I used to want everything to happen right away—the website, the clients, the exposure—but I’ve learned that sustainable growth comes from showing up consistently and letting alignment lead the way.
And personally, I’ve deepened my commitment to balance—honoring my health, spirituality, and rest as much as my work. When I’m grounded, I can serve others with more clarity and peace. That balance, and those boundaries, have become my non-negotiables.
Now, I remind my clients that protecting their peace is part of their healing.
