Meet Morgan DeVivo

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Morgan DeVivo. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Morgan below.

Hi Morgan, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?

I definitely get my work ethic from my parents. My dad has worked tirelessly at his job for 20+ years, and my mom is a middle school teacher and an author, which serves as a double challenge. In fact, her stories inspired me to write stories of my own, which brings me to where I am today.
From their hard work and dedication, my parents have built themselves from the ground up, allowing me to receive opportunities so that I can fulfill my own dreams. I aspire to follow in their footsteps of success.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a 16-year-old author from Florida; I write sci-fi and fantasy novels. My first book, 40 Days, is a mystery sci-fi about a girl trying to escape a corrupt facility. It was first published in 2023, and was recently republished by Four Horsemen Publications with a new cover, new typeset, and some new story additions.
My second novel, Sun and Moon, is a romantasy about two ill-fated lovers in the midst of a religious war. It is currently in the process of getting published, and I’m so excited to share it with the world!
Today, I’m currently writing my third novel (and second in the fantasy series) Blood and Bones. I haven’t decided on a good elevator pitch yet, but it follows the life of a broken girl trying to discover herself while also grappling with her inner rage.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Some areas of knowledge that best help me write my books are understanding basic character motivations (what pushes them forward?), how to write a compelling plot, and how to make a story truly feel human. People are complex; conflict is complex. It isn’t a wild magic system or a bloody battle or a natural disaster that makes a story–it’s the characters, the human aspect of it all. By taking a moment to observe your surroundings and allowing yourself to feel everything around you, you can shape your stories around real, honest emotion and tension and connection. That’s the most important thing to understand before you start writing.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

I’d say Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë has definitely played an important role in my author journey. It’s a classic Gothic novel about a girl trying to find independence and love as she grows into a young woman. I love the writing style and the themes this book portrays. From romance, self discovery, deception, and duty, it truly has it all, and I often find myself returning back to this book when I don’t have any motivation.
