We recently connected with Sammie Augusto and have shared our conversation below.
Sammie, thank you so much for taking the time to share your lessons learned with us and we’re sure your wisdom will help many. So, one question that comes up often and that we’re hoping you can shed some light on is keeping creativity alive over long stretches – how do you keep your creativity alive?
Keeping my creativity alive is quite easy actually, i’ve never had a problem with it. I find myself constantly having ideas for songs, books, movies, etc…and my mind is always on the go. I write 1 to 2 songs in a week or two whenever I’m not busy. I find the best way to keep my creativity going is to be always putting myself into a setting that inspires me, such as going on a walk, listening to a song, or even meditating.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Creating music is my favorite thing to do. I am in two bands, Flailing Idiot (since 2019), and The Cherry Bombs (since 2024), both bands are all girl groups. The Cherry Bombs actually just released a new song called Ghosted! In fact, each of my bands have released a number of songs on all streaming platforms, and I myself have released music under my name (Sammie Augusto) as well. Being able to perform the songs you have created is the most incredible feeling in the world. I’d say the most special thing about what I do is watching people forget about their problems for just a while to listen to music, and to connect with it. I want the music that I write to be relatable, and for people to feel it in their bones. Being able to lift someone’s pain with a song-even just for three minutes-means the world to me. I also love to perform in plays and do theatre productions, in general, being on stage is a huge part of my life.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities I think every musician should have are: 1. Honesty. Being able to be honest in the music you are writing, and honest about the person that you truly are is one of the biggest points I have. I believe that honesty is one of the greatest virtues one can have. 2. Being strong. Having a good head upon your shoulders is a big one, being able to take advice, work on your performance, to be mentally and physically prepared for a show, and to even be spiritually prepared is huge. I usually do meditations before shows if I can, as it grounds myself, then I warmup my vocals, then my body. You must be strong in your head and body to give the best show you can. 3. The will to preform. There’s always a reason for why a musician is a musician. Whether that be that music is an escape for one, or maybe even it’s just fun. For me, I play because I enjoy it, and it’s also the biggest outlet for my mental health. I play to honor past loved ones and to keep their legacy alive, all the while having a good time and feeling free.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
I have experienced a lot of loss at a very young age. My Uncle Jameson who was my best friend, a second father to me, and my biggest inspiration, passed away unexpectedly when I was eleven years old. We used to play music together all the time, he was an incredible musician. After his passing, I promised to create music for him and to work on my songwriting skills everyday. He has helped me through it all and not a day goes by where I don’t think about him. Recently, my papa passed away. He was also a large part of my life, and I find myself creating more and more music. Music is such an incredible outlet and holds so much power, so much love can be brought to life through a song!
