Meet Shaun Flinn

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Shaun Flinn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Shaun , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.

As an artist creativity is an interesting topic. No doubt any artist reading this has hit a “wall” or has experienced “artist block”.

Luckily, in my career, my clients are always throwing me ideas I would never consider and that keeps me on my toes for the most part. When it comes to making my own art though, I’ve always struggled to find a voice or theme. Growing up, I was inspired by comic art, as a young adult it was art nouveau and now my inspirations have come from many aspects of my life and experience. This, along with constantly finding new things to learn about I have a hard time NOT finding something cool to draw.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am a professional tattoo artist of 18 years specializing in anime, newschool and neotraditional.

I couldn’t imagine working a different job or career. I get to make people happy and feel fulfilled for a living. I get to meet new people, hear their stories and collaborate with them to make an awesome piece of art.

I do my best to have a relaxed, fun environment for my clients. Most of the time you’ll find me talking about movies, shows, anime, video games or star wars haha

With the new year coming up, we will be having our quarterly consultation Day on January 11th @10am

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

As an artist and business owner, learning everything I can about art fundamentals and running a successful business has been huge. Having the passion and drive to continue learning is key.

My advice for growing in any area is to RESIST NOTHING and show up even when you dont want to.

What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?

This time last year I decided to take a marketing and finance course. The world has been changing quite a bit and I need to keep up. So the last year has been filled with learning about content creation, marketing and business. It was difficult and scary but now I have a bunch of great systems in place to make my life and my clients experience much easier.
