We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Tricia a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Tricia, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I have read every book I could find about creativity and art marketing. I learned a great deal and began following the authors’ suggestions. The result was that I became a proficient, selling artist. I still follow the path that was laid out in the books I read. The most important part of that advice is to work on your art every day and to promote it every day. Persistence is the best way to move forward in an art career. While talent may play a part, hard work is the key to success.
I have gone on to coach other artists on how to sell their work and to write a book, “The Artist’s Map to Success.” I am now working on a second edition of that book. It contains much more information than I gathered for writing the 1st book in 2020. It will be released after January 1, 2026.
I have also given presentations at The Latimer Club in Reno, Nevada, Fine Arts Supply Store in Reno, and The Prism Gallery in Gardnerville. My 1st edition book can be purchased on Amazon, at The Artist’s Co-op Gallery in Reno, at Nevada Fine Arts in Reno, and at The Prism Photographic Studio in Gardnerville.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an artist. I started coloring on the walls of my parents’ house at the age of three. (This was excused as my mother drew murals on my nursery walls.) I was the class artist in middle school and high school, and I attended Saturday art classes at the Chouinard Art Institute and UCLA. I went on to major in art at UCLA where I earned a BA in Studio Art. I taught high school art and community education art classes. I show my art in Reno at The Artists’ Co-op of Reno, in Artsy Fartsy Gallery in Carson City and in the Andrea Gallery in Scottsdale.
I work both realistically and abstractly in watercolor and acrylic. I hope to share my joy of life with my viewers. My art will make you happy.
Look for my art at the Latimer Show in the Reno City Gallery this January. Also, in January, the 2nd edition of my book, “The Artist’s Map to Success” will be released.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
While gaining skill in executing my art was important, my persistence, consistency, and desire to learn about the creative process were the most essential qualities that propelled me forward. If you are starting, work on your art every day. Take classes, workshops, and online videos. Your art will improve as a result. Then, read. Find out what others have to say about the artmaking experience and what it takes to be good. Lastly, learn to market your art. You are not only an artist. You are also an entrepreneur.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The book that impacted me the most was Eric Maisel’s “Fearless Creating”. The most important thing he taught me was that no matter how busy life is, find time to do your art every day. An hour a day adds up over time. 365 hours of work is a lot of artwork!
The second thing I learned is that anxiety is a part of the creative experience. Anxiety about whether or not a piece is done, anxiety about starting a new piece, anxiety about showing and selling your work, and more. In his book, he gives ways to combat anxiety.
The third thing I learned is that an artist must protect her solitude. Art can only be done alone, and sometimes the time demands of family and friends take precedence over the time needed to produce the art. It helps to have a discussion with those around you about the need for alone time that your art demands.
