We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Rose Hutson. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Rose below.
Hi Rose , thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I feel it’s important to know that my grandparents raised me. They are the only reason I’m still here today, and deserve all the credit for making me into the woman I’ve become. After my father left, my grandfather, Ernie Pavlock, stepped into his newfound father role rather effortlessly. He owned his own business in Texas for 32 years, only retiring once his illness started to cause his decline in 2021. He was my biggest role model growing up, he and my grandmother both, and watching them over the years work endlessly to try and support me in life was what really taught me that no matter the job—you give it all. Whether it was cleaning toilets or struggling to finish college, I always worked hard to push myself past my limitations. And I’m so grateful I did. I’ve worked a lot of jobs in my life. I’ve certainly been known to be a jack of all trades. But I also give this aspect of my personality a lot of credit as well. From retail to photography to social media creation, though I didn’t realize it at the moment, I was slowly gathering all the skills necessary to eventually open my business, which I’ve ran solo and successfully for 2 years now. I always wanted to follow in my grandfather’s footsteps and open my own store. And I am very proud to say I did it. I just wish he’d been here to see me do it.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Rose Hutson, I’m 29, and I’m the owner of The Crow’s Nest Oddities Store located near downtown Santa Fe, New Mexico! There’s many things I’m proud of when it comes to owning my store. But what I feel has been most special for me is 1. giving back to my community (I’ve been able to raise about $2,500 for local charities and organizations around town since opening) and 2. I love that I’ve been able to create such a safe, warm space for those younger in our community who were craving something…a little weirder, and more curated to them!
The Crow’s Nest is an Oddities and Curiosities shop featuring all things weird, wild, and spooky! We specialize in local, women, and LGBTQAI+ artists! Started by the owner, Rose Hutson, in December of 2023,The Crow’s Nest offers a wide selection of products—such as taxidermy, natural history, haunted items, oddities, and so much more.
We host a plethora of events, such as Skull Painting Classes, Outdoor Market/Fundraising Events, Pop-Ups, Dance Parties, and more!
Please come in and say! We love educating the public on the extensive history of the oddities community. And I promise, nothing bites…

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Social media creation, my passion for history, and my ability to be creative with curation are a few of the skills I’ve found vital for this business! But also, I found early on I really had to toughen up if I wanted this to work. People are going to have opinions about this field—strong ones—and while in the beginning I was anxious about standing up for my craft and my passion, as I grew, so did my backbone. Since opening, I’ve learned critical lessons and gained a confidence I never believed possible for myself—another blessing I’ll always be grateful for, no matter what happens in the future with the shop.
Things to remember for those who wish to open a business:
Every single day is different. You can make $3.00 one day, and over $1,000 the next. So, learn to surrender. Roll with the ebbs and flows of business, or else you will drive yourself mad. Because retail is such a volatile model, always remember the day by day rule. And always, remember to breathe! Money will come, money will go. But I definitely found if I didn’t make it the center of my importance, the faster and more effortlessly it seemed to find me.
Contribute to your community—support other small businesses, help those less fortunate, don’t fixate on the money, carry love and empathy for your customers, but also set boundaries! Making little connections, especially in a place like Santa Fe, will only make your business better!
Have fun! Time will fly. If what you choose to do is a real passion, love it with all your heart every single day. Just like a partner, it is going to take consistency, attention, love, and WORK. That business should be your baby, so nurture it. I promise, it will grow. And it will be incredibly rewarding.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I re-read The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success by Deepak Chopra every year. At least once. It’s a helpful text for when I need to ground myself, remain humble and open, and be reminded of just how powerful the mind, the heart, the ego, and the universe are when all placed together on the same pedestal.
