Hi MARIAH, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do the first 90 minutes of your day look like?
The first 90 minutes of my day consist of devotional prayer and reading my Bible. It’s very substantial to hear from God before I start my day. It keeps me focused and connected on how God would like me to go about my day.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Mariah C. James I am a Licensed Esthetician, Freelance Makeup Artist, Social Media Influencer, & small business owner.
I aspire to open my own Esthetician suite so I can service a multiplicity of clientele.
Originally I did not want to pursue the beauty industry field but unbeknownst to myself I obtained a natural talent for it.
I would always find myself wearing makeup with my friends and foster sisters.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
To clarify “The World” didn’t tell me who I was God did.
Furthermore, I was just a young girl aspiring to take her fascination for computers and smart phones to her career field. Granted academically my progress reports in Junior & High School did not reflect someone who was invested in technology.
As my last two years of High School approached I found that I had a mutual interest in makeup & skincare just like a relative of mine.
This very relative attended Esthetician School as well as I did later down the line. She witnessed the precision I possessed with applying my makeup to my neck.
Of course when she proposed that I should pursue a career in the beauty field I definitely declined.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes Absolutely! When I attended esthetician school in 2023, I struggled during the course & outside of school.
My finances were slim to none & I faced a plethora of mental/physical health challenges along the way.
For the grace of God, he was my sole source of my perseverance and resilience.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That they are accepting of all shapes, forms, and sizes of beauty.
It is in fact, a lie. The beauty standards are so unrealistic, if you are, for example, a size 2 or more you’re practically fat. If you are plus size, you are basically “a beast” or my bad obese. If you even eat many or displeased.
There is so much more that I can say.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What will you regret not doing?
Basing my business and career on my faith in God. Because my business is ministry..
God is the soul purpose behind all that I do. For me it’s not just a service, but it is serving. Some of the clients that I encounter either are having a bad day, lost the loved one, or feel that God doesn’t love them or won’t meet them where they’re at.
