Story & Lesson Highlights with Michelle Fong of Meridian, Idaho

We recently had the chance to connect with Michelle Fong and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
There are two things that bring me the most absolute joy outside of work these days. I have two golden retrievers who are my whole world — they’re siblings named Maui and Mr. Bruce Bochy. They’re about to turn six years old, and I’ll fight anyone who says they’re “just dogs.” They’re my baby boys through and through.
The other thing that brings me joy is golf. I started learning a couple of years ago during COVID when there was so much extra outdoor time, and apparently, I’ve caught the bug because now I want to golf all the time. With the colder months rolling in, though, it’s looking like doggie cuddles by the fire are in my near future — and honestly, I’m not mad about it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Michelle Fong, licensed esthetician and owner of Succulent Skin Day Spa in Meridian, Idaho. I’ve been in the beauty industry for 22 years and have spent the last decade specializing in skin health, relaxation, and confidence-building through customized facial experiences. My approach blends professional skincare with a personal touch — every facial is designed to help clients feel beautiful, inside and out.
Succulent Skin is known for its seasonal facial menus, thoughtful details, and cozy, welcoming atmosphere. It’s not just about glowing skin — it’s about helping people reconnect with themselves and feel cared for. I’ve been honored to receive multiple Quality Awards for excellence in service and was named Boise’s Favorite Day Spa (Gold Winner) in 2024 and continuing to be recognized in 2025.
Beyond the treatment room, I’m also passionate about helping the next generation of estheticians succeed. Through my mentorship program, Succulent University, I teach newly licensed professionals how to build confidence, master their craft, and grow their dream careers — all with the same heart and intention I bring to my spa.
Right now, I’m focused on expanding into my new location, and continuing to grow both sides of my business — creating transformative skincare experiences for my clients and empowering future estheticians to thrive.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
This is such a powerful question. It’s funny because I talk about this often, but I’ve never really taken the time to write it down or explain why. Without a doubt, the person who taught me the most about work is my father. He’s the reason I am who I am today — the drive, the values, and the work ethic I carry all come from him.
My dad was one of the hardest workers I’ve ever known. Once he learned he was going to be a father, everything shifted for him. His priorities became providing for his family and making sure my mom could stay home with us. Being the sole provider for a family of four in the ’80s and ’90s wasn’t easy, but he did it with unwavering dedication and pride.
Now, when I see him with his tired face and achy body, I also see a man filled with overwhelming joy — proud of the two successful children he raised. His example taught me that hard work is never just about the hours you put in, but about the love, integrity, and purpose behind it.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
This is a tough one, because I don’t know if I’d call it fear — it’s more about my relationship with failure. There have definitely been moments in my life where the fear of failure crept in, mostly because I’ve never had a Plan B. My mindset has always been that if I don’t create a Plan B, there’s no room for Plan A to fail.
Of course, there have been many failed Plan A’s — that’s the nature of going into business for yourself. But each one has exposed me to what it really means to deal with ambiguity. I’ve learned to pivot, adjust my strategies, and shift my plans when needed, which has made me stronger, more adaptable, and more confident in trusting the process even when things don’t go exactly as expected.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
This wasn’t always the case. For a long time, I was afraid to show my face on my business socials because I felt it wasn’t “industry perfect.” Maybe my ring light wasn’t right, the tripod was off, my house wasn’t quiet, or my appearance wasn’t flawless — my hair wasn’t combed, or I didn’t have makeup on.

I’m naturally a very private person, and I worried about sharing anything from my personal life. But I discovered that when I do share a glimpse — especially my two pups — my community connects with me even more.

So I started putting myself out there on camera in an unapologetic way, whether to share something educational, fun, or just a little peek into my life. The response was incredible: my engagement, views, and connection with my audience jumped immediately.

Now? Yes — what you see publicly is the real me. I’ve learned that showing up as yourself, imperfect and all, resonates far more than trying to be “perfect.”

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
One thing I understand deeply that many people don’t — especially being in the beauty and wellness industry — is that what we do is not about taking someone’s money for an instant feel-good or quick fix. It’s never been about that.

It’s about listening, connecting, building trust, and encouraging people to achieve their wellness goals. True results come from understanding someone’s needs, guiding them, and creating a space where they feel supported and empowered, not just pampered. That’s the heart of what I do every day.
