Mpls Drew shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Good morning Mpls , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What are you most proud of building — that nobody sees?
I would say the thing I’m most proud of building, that no one can see is, energy awareness. I used to consider almost everyone I crossed paths with a friend of mine or someone that I should let around me more. Not knowing the impact it would have on my energy and overall peace. Now I have no problem weeding out the people or things that don’t positively contribute to me, my peace or energy.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am, MPLS DREW, a conscious poet and a high energy performer. I heighten the energy at any venue I have the honor to perform at. Keeping the crowds engaged throughout the entirety of my set. Whether it be my call and response songs, or thought provoking lyrics, attendees are sure to stay intrigued and engaged.
Currently in album mode. Finding the right vibe for a cohesive body of work, with hopes of releasing it early 2026. Until then, you can head over to your favorite streaming platform and stream all of the music already out. Some of my favorites are: “Mind Over Matter”, “Own Way” and “Myself”
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
Oooh, this is a good one. I think one of the most notable “bond breakers” is Trust. To trust someone usually means they have proven themselves to be a trust worthy person. Whether it’s keeping a secret you’ve shared with them, or even just someone following through with what they say, some sort of a bond is usually created in that moment.
Now, restoring them is a whole different ball game, at least for me. If someone I trusted, broke that trust or bond in some shape or form. I guarantee it’s going to take waaaaay longer for them to regain that trust, compared to somebody I recently met. Because the newer person I met hasn’t had the opportunity to break that bond. Where the “longer” friend had the opportunity and took it.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I would tell my younger self: Don’t bottle up your anger, and express what is irritating, upsetting or whatever in the moment. It will save you friendships, time and energy in your young adult life.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
I would say the whole idea of only being able to make real money being a “mainstream” artist. When it comes to streaming payouts, I would say it’s true. But there are many different ways to stay financially stable without being a “mainstream” artist. Selling merch, live performance ticket sales, structuring guarantee pay in contracts. It all comes down to consistency.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop waiting for the “right” moment for things. Like releasing music, or even starting new hobbies and everything in between. I’ve learned that waiting for the “right” moment leaves a lot of room for second guessing yourself.
