Story & Lesson Highlights with Melissa Atencia

Melissa Atencia shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Good morning Melissa, it’s such a great way to kick off the day – I think our readers will love hearing your stories, experiences and about how you think about life and work. Let’s jump right in? Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
Yes! It may seem foolish, but recently I got called to do a corporate shoot, where I do very natural makeup on mostly men. One of them told me he hit his head while gardening and he had a small cut on his forehead. I asked him if I could cover it and he agreed. No one was able to tell he had a cut on his forehead. It may seem silly, but I was so happy at the end of it, where no one mentioned it neither to me or him. Means my work was done well!

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Melissa Atencia, I am a Makeup Artist with over 9 years of experience. I am originally from Brazil but currently I live in Toronto, ON. I have also lived in LA for 3 years of my life, where I went to makeup school. This year, I had the opportunity to join the Union and work on big sets as a Daily MUA, so I was able to see the dimension of those blockbuster movies and TV Shows. I was truly amazed!

Okay, so here’s a deep one: What breaks the bonds between people—and what restores them?
I believe that lies are the biggest bond breaking and the restoration is exactly the opposite – coming clean and telling the truth, even if it’s ugly. Being kind is a big plus, even if people haven’t been treating you properly. Be kind, always!

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Absolutely! I believe everyone has one (or many) episodes like this in their lives – it’s just part of being human. Having recently moved to a new country, finding work hasn’t always been easy. There was a time where I thought I wasn’t a good artist and should just give up. Thankfully, I persisted and this year has been one of the greatest for my career.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
My mother and my husband’s are the best ones to talk to when I need new ideas or different opinions. She is more down to earth and my husband is a director, so he is more creative.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I hope I leave the impression of being a good person, on top of being a good professional. I hope clients have a good experience when they sit on my chair, feeling comfortable and relaxed. Kindness would be the most important for me!
