We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ms. Yasong Wang. Check out our conversation below.
Hi Yasong, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I can’t speak for other fields, but I think that a lot of filmmakers struggle with opportunity. People really underestimate the number of talented filmmakers in the world. The people you see on screen are actually just a small percentage of the filmmakers with the skill and competence to be there. The ability to make great films is much more of a prerequisite than something that can differentiate a filmmaker, which makes it incredibly difficult to be noticed in a crowded field. Since it’s such a competitive area, opportunities are very limited so a lot of creative and talented people never get the chance to demonstrate their skills.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Yasong Wang, and I am a filmmaker based in Los Angeles. After graduating from San Francisco State University for my MFA, I started Yasong Studios, the company under which I intend to produce and direct my future films. I love horror films, so those are the focus of my studio, but I have made drama, romance, and documentary films in the past. I am currently working on a new project with my team that I hope to enter into production soon.
Okay, so here’s a deep one: What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, what I believed about myself was largely shaped by what other people close to me told me I was. If I was called smart, it’s what I believed myself to be. The same went for when I was told something negative. As I grew up, I realized that what other people told me I was wasn’t an accurate representation of what I was actually capable of, it was just what they could interpret at that moment. I used to believe about myself what I was told, but now I believe that they know less about me than I do.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering taught me perspective. I believe it teaches everyone perspective, really. I don’t think everyone suffers the same way; some may suffer from physical issues, personal issues, or financial issues. Suffering taught me the value of success. With success being so different in comparison, suffering makes it so much more valuable and worth fighting for, and when I achieve success in any matter, I can actually enjoy the victory and be satisfied with the effort I put in.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
It may sound odd as an example, but I just watched Predator: Badlands, and the main character “Dek” embodies exactly what I want to say. He’s an example of someone who is just undyingly resilient and has unshakeable self-belief. He refuses to consider an alternative to success, whether that be a result of confidence or a refusal to think of himself negatively. His attitude towards life being very “take it by the horns” just draws admiration for the kind of character he is, regardless of his accomplishments and abilities.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What do you think people will most misunderstand about your legacy?
I wouldn’t say “misunderstand” so much as “not be aware of”, but it would be the amount of times I would have had doubts. I feel like after someone accomplishes something, everyone assumes they always knew they were going to make it. The reality is that many, many times you have no idea if things will work out, but you do them anyway. The way I see it, that makes it a lot more impressive, doing things even when you are well aware that there is an outcome where you can fail.
