Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Devin Dowell of Virginia

Devin Dowell shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Devin, really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: What is a normal day like for you right now?
A typical day for me starts pretty peacefully, I always make a matcha in the morning to kickstart my energy. I use oat milk and add a couple pumps of vanilla and brown sugar syrup, it’s kind of my go-to recipe now. After that, I’ll dive into content planning, emails, and mapping out future trips to the city for shoots or collaborations. My days are a mix of creativity and structure, and I like to plan things ahead so I stay on schedule. In the evenings, I’ll usually grab dinner with friends and then video call my mom to talk about our day. she’s honestly my favorite person.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Yeah, of course! I’m Devin Dowell. I’m a model and digital creator. I’ve been modeling for about four years now and creating branded content for over six. I’ve collaborated with brands like DermaTech Skin, Sprinter Vodka (Kylie Jenner), Thayers, and more. I love blending storytelling with visuals. I think what makes my work unique is that I create everything in my own way, from the concept to the final edit, even if it’s not for a sponsored project. I really like keeping things authentic and artistic at the same time. I’ve done some of my own little projects to promote brands myself like the brands Lore Perfume, Rhode, and KHY. Right now, I’m working on more travel and lifestyle content, which I’m really excited to share soon.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Definitely my mom. She’s always seen me clearly, even in moments when I couldn’t see myself at all. Before I had any confidence or real direction, she believed in what I was capable of, not just in my work but in who I am as a person. She’s the one who’s always reminded me that I’m meant to create and to keep going, even when things feel uncertain. I think having someone see you that deeply really changes how you grow into yourself

If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
I’d tell my younger self to take a deep breath and stop trying so hard to be perfect. You don’t have to have it all figured out yet. The things that make you feel different or misunderstood right now are actually the things that will make you stand out later. Keep creating, even when no one’s watching, and don’t let fear make you doubt your choices. One day, you’ll look back and realize everything you went through was shaping you into exactly who you were meant to be.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Whom do you admire for their character, not their power?
I know my family and friends will say “of course it’s her” when I say this but I’ve always admired Sharon Tate, not just for her beauty or talent, but for her spirit and the kindness she showed to everyone around her. There was something so genuine and gentle about her presence that still inspires people decades later. She carried herself with such grace, even in an industry that can be harsh and demanding. I think what I admire most is how she stayed true to who she was soft, loving, and full of light, and that kind of character leaves a lasting impact. I truly feel connected with her.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. What do you understand deeply that most people don’t?
I think what I understand deeply that most people don’t is the quiet power of kindness. It’s not always flashy or recognized, but the way you treat people even in small, unseen ways shapes your life and theirs more than anything else. I’ve realized that choosing empathy and compassion consistently, even when it’s hard, creates ripples that come back in ways you might never expect. Kindness is underrated, but it’s one of the strongest things we can offer the world. I wish we really had more kindness in the world.
