Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Othniel Horvath of Los Angeles

We recently had the chance to connect with Othniel Horvath and have shared our conversation below.

Othniel, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes, because I don’t take a no for answer, not because I’m overconfident or cocky, but rather because I believe in what I do, I believe in people I surrender myself with and I believe that anything is possible if someone truly wants it.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Otie and I am the founder of StayFocused, the clothing brand that is more than apparel, but rather a lifestyle of discipline, self-control and focused life. It is a gym to street wear brand for men and women as well.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. Who taught you the most about work?
My father. I always saw him as the most hard-working man on this earth, he worked three shifts just to provide for his family and he always came home with a smile on his face, playing with us and spending quality time with us even after a 16-hour work day.

What fear has held you back the most in your life?
The fear of rejection or the “what if they don’t like me and say no”. I think I missed out a lot earlier just because I was afraid of them saying no or rejecting me, so I had to learn how to look up to myself, improve and overcome that fear. Once I started to beat that, I started to see the good results and the success in my life.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
There’s a truth I believe in: “worst that can happen is they say no”, but I even thought about it a bit more and got to the point of the truth: “there is no option B, I have to win, I will win”.
Many people try to talk me out of new ideas or crazy things, but I know the truth, there is no plan B, I have to do it, I have to win and I will win.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop working this much and would immediately try to spend the most time of the day with my family. I only work this much now so in a couple of years I can get there and I can quit this crazy lifestyle and spend tons of times with my loved ones.
