Tinna James shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Tinna, thank you for taking the time to reflect back on your journey with us. I think our readers are in for a real treat. There is so much we can all learn from each other and so thank you again for opening up with us. Let’s get into it: What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about your customers?
I would honestly like to say this most surprising thing I have learned about my customers is that my music is listened to more by a male audience. I was writing music for women’s empowerment, anthems, and when I looked at my streams and the demographic is majority male. I was surprised to discover men bump my music more than anyone else.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My name is Tinna James. I am an independent music artist based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. My genres include gospel, R&B, Jazz, House, and Hip Hop. I have been blessed to perform in many venues, some of my favorites include The Heinz Memorial Chapel , The August Wilson African American Cultural Center.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I have been singing since I was two years old. I started off singing in the Church of God in Christ. I can remember my Aunt not wanting to attend church services, but when she found out I would be singing, she would do her best to make it. Growing up, my Aunt was battling a drug addiction, and there were periods of time where she would disappear. When she knew I was singing, I could guarantee a visit. She was one of my biggest supporters. I loved the way God allowed my voice to help people. God said my voice would help people be healed, delivered, and set free. Even as a young child, it was amazing to see God use me.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Girl, you are doing it! Everything that was prophesied, promised, and spoken, you are doing it! Those entries and mental mapping in your journals have now become your reality. You are doing just what you said you would do. God has had His hand on you and helped you to reach so many goals. You are winning and you will win!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
You ahve to be young, you have to be skinny, you have to pick one genre. I choose to write, sing, and be who I am called to be.
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. What light inside you have you been dimming?
Sometimes I have found myself dimming my star to make others feel comfortable. But that stops now. I made a promise to myself that I will live unapologetically and be who I am called and chosen to be. I am called to be a change agent. I am the Keeper of the flame. Jesus is the light of the world. I have to stop feeling bad that others may not have the light that I carry.
