Matys Colpron shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Matys, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Composing!
There’s nothing quite like composing a new piece of music, exploring sounds on the piano or making beats on ableton. Whatever the medium, I love to reconnect with myself through making new music.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello!
My name is Matys, I write a lot of jazz fusion, lead two different projects, one under my name and a collective called the Sextet Façade. I am a busy drummer who loves to work too much, part time teacher and general music nerd. I grew up in a family of Baroque musicians but didn’t choose that path, instead opting to jazz music, after I fell in love with the music of Charles Mingus. Since then I’ve led my own band and tried to make a name for myself in Montréal.
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
When came the time to apply to University, I didn’t make my first audition. It was a huge set back and a tough blow for my ego at the time. But it shaped how I see the world and music itself. Sometimes you lose, and it’s not a defeat but an opportunity to work and better yourself. Even though that year was difficult, it allowed me to stay humble and succeed the following year. I’m glad I got to learn that lesson early because music is full of failures and setbacks, but it’s not about how much you lose, but how much you keep going forward.
Is there something you miss that no one else knows about?
I miss being a student, I think we’re so eager to get into the real world but once arrived, I no longer have time to do anything. While studying, you take for granted the time you have for practicing, studying and hanging out with friends. Adulthood is responsibilities and deadlines, it’s a far cry from the student life once you’re there.
I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. Is the public version of you the real you?
Of course not,
once you get to know the artists around you, you realize everyone has doubts, fears and difficulties. But we’re not on stage to give the audience our fears, instead we need to tell our story. Being a performer is playing a part, what’s important is the truthfulness of your message and your artistic statement.
Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: When do you feel most at peace?
On stage, it’s a moment of freedom when what matters most is the music in the moment. In that time, I’m no longer stressing out, just enjoying the music.
