Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Gianna Leo Falcon of Manhattan

Gianna Leo Falcon shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.

Gianna , really appreciate you sharing your stories and insights with us. The world would have so much more understanding and empathy if we all were a bit more open about our stories and how they have helped shaped our journey and worldview. Let’s jump in with a fun one: Who are you learning from right now?
I’m currently learning from Nancy Mellon, a profoundly talented narrative-based storyteller. She uses the art of storytelling not only as a form of therapeutic healing, but also as a pathway to physical and spiritual well-being.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Currently I am a wedding photographer and run a fine art wedding photography company, as well as working as a freelance mental health counselor specializing in chronic illness and substance use disorder. I draw a lot of my inspiration from my own personal journey as an artist, a creative, and someone who has struggled with chronic illness and substance use disorder in my life. It has been tremendously meaningful and powerful for me to finally be able to employ myself in service of others.

I consider myself an unconventional and alternative critical thinker, enamored by the mysteries of this world. I think that energy bleeds into my work as an artist, where I choose to see weddings in a nontraditional way, less concerned with ideals of perfection and more focused on seeing my couples as real humans. I am devoted to telling honest stories through the lens of a true artist, always looking for beauty and transforming the mundanity of life.

Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
Canvas Rebel is really throwing out some powerful questions today, thanks for that. My earliest memories of feeling powerful were when I realized I had the ability to see many different theories in a cloud, so to speak, and like a puzzle, I am able to visually put together multiple theories into one concrete, unwavering truth about the world we live in. One of those theories has been around water and the significance it has in our deeper understanding of how we are all connected. The work of Veda Austin has deeply influenced me. We are largely made up of water, and our waters absolutely communicate with each other. We are all connected through this liquid that exists in many forms and within all solid matter. My ability to understand complex concepts has always been my deepest source of power.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?
The suffering is sometimes actually the success,

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
I think people have multiple versions of themselves, and that’s necessary to function in a totally dysfunctional society. It forces us to split ourselves in order to survive. The person I am with my clients is completely different from who I am with my family. At home we let our guards down. Emotions run higher and feel more chaotic in our safe spaces, just like a child who holds it together all day but falls apart the moment they’re picked up from school. We all need that space where we can be messy and imperfect, where we can work our shit out before facing the world again. With that being said, I’m a pretty authentic person, sometimes to a fault, and I’m not afraid of imperfection or of being seen as static. I’m okay with being imperfect. It’s necessary for my survival as an artist, a mother, and a therapist.

Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
using computers or smart phones .
