Sarah Lambert shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Hi Sarah, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Organizing! It sounds dorky, but I love it. The whole process… Sorting, decluttering, finding homes for everything in places that make sense, creating systems that work for someone’s needs. I do a little bit of professional organizing on the side, but I also just love doing it for myself for fun. In addition to spaces, I can be known to get lost in a project that involves organizing my thoughts, too, like creating resources or education for my team and customers.
Organizing satisfies the part of my brain that needs order. I have a hard time relaxing when my space is not in order, but I also love the sense of completion I feel when I finish an organizing task. I take pride in a job well done, and I usually can’t stop admiring it for about an hour afterward…haha!
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Living Simply with Sarah is about more than just essential oils. It’s a lifestyle. It’s all about going back to basics and connecting with the gifts of nature…living simply and naturally, the way we were meant to. I’m very passionate about helping people raise their vibration by reducing their exposure to everyday toxins, upleveling spiritually, and increasing their wellness with natural solutions.
I am a Wellness Advocate with doTERRA Essential Oils, who I’ve partnered with because of their dedication to quality, humanitarian work, and ethical sourcing. This role allows me to connect people with the essential oils and other natural solutions that can help support them through the physical, mental, and emotional struggles they’re experiencing as well as provide cleaner alternatives to traditional toxic products.
My biggest passion is helping people who want to transform their lives and take some of their power back when it comes to their health by reducing their exposure to toxins. When I learned how many toxins we are exposed to every day and how those toxins can wreak havoc within our bodies and ultimately lead to cellular damage and disease, I was shocked. In addition to the obvious things like air pollution, tobacco, alcohol, etc., these toxins come from things like the products we use to clean our homes, some of the medications we take, the products we put on our bodies, and the “foods” we put in our mouths. The more I learned, the more I realized I needed to make some changes. I started replacing my traditional products as they ran out with cleaner versions and essential oils, and when I started seeing the differences that made in my overall health, I knew I had to share this with others as well because they probably have no idea either!
The most important role I play in my business is educator. I believe essential oils require education on how to use them properly, what beneficial properties each oil has, how to empower oneself to find the natural solutions they need for what they’re struggling with, and a little bit of the science behind HOW and WHY they work so well. I would hate to see someone purchase essential oils and then never take them out of the box because they didn’t know how or when to use them.
I think my committment to educating the general public, making sure I’m helping people find real, effective solutions, and caring for my own customers is something that sets me apart. Some of the things I offer include:
• Teaching classes both in-person and online on foundational wellness, metabolic health, and an introduction to essential oils.
• Working one-on-one with people to help them achieve their health and wellness goals. I first get to know more about what they are struggling with and what they want to achieve, then I provide education and help connect them with natural solutions and lifestyle tweaks that can help them get to where they want to be. I can help them create a custom plan that includes not only essential oils, but other lifestyle considerations as well. If they are local, I am able to offer them a free biometric health scan to find out what areas of the body are out of balance and what natural solutions can help bring those things back into balance.
• Providing customer service, follow-up, and continuing education opportunities to my customers to ensure they get the most out of their experience.
• Connecting people with outside resources that can help them achieve their goals.
• Providing ingredient education as needed.
My customers enjoy access to continuing oil education classes on a variety of subjects, short educational emails they receive once a week for their first year using essential oils, and access to an exclusive customer education group on Facebook where we share ideas and recipes, answer each others’ questions, participate in group challenges, and more. We have a good time and make essential oils fun!
Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
Somewhere along the way, I developed people-pleasing tendencies. I spent a lot of my early life not feeling heard, and I think after awhile, I gave up trying and began defaulting to what everyone else wanted, at the expense of my own needs.
Eventually, through a series of events and intense personal growth, I finally found my authentic voice and began to understand that the people who are meant for me are attracted to that voice.
What fear has held you back the most in your life?
Due to some of those early experiences, I think my fear of speaking up because I didn’t think people cared what I had to say really hindered me. I stayed stagnant in my business far too long, I let people walk all over me, and I never really felt satisfied with my life (because I was never really true to myself). My business requires me to talk to people, but I was so shy and timid because the stories I was telling myself were that no one cares what I have to share and no one wants to learn about essential oils from me because I’m not an expert.
I was also very non-confrontational for the longest time, and I think it prevented me from standing up for myself and getting my needs met. I’m a totally different person today, and I now understand that it’s better to have a slightly uncomfortable conversation sooner rather than let resentment build under the surface and deal with a way more uncomfortable situation later.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
Fads come on quickly and go just as quickly. Foundational shifts are lasting, and they usually come with a paradigm shift.
Let’s take essential oils, for example. A lot of people get into them for a little bit, and then move onto something else. For me, it was a total lifestyle change. As I saw the value in living as naturally as possible, and as I proactively used my essential oils and supplements, I noticed such a profound shift in my health and wellness that I decided I could never go back to my old ways of doing things. Now I use essential oils for literally everything: health, personal care, cleaning, emotional regulation, and so much more. I incorporate them into so many things I do throughout the day, and I understand the importance of educating others about the toxins we are exposed to everyday and how replacing them with natural solutions can have a big impact on their lives as well. My favorite people to work with are those who also understand this importance and want to work together to create a cleaner lifestyle!
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Are you doing what you were born to do—or what you were told to do?
I believe I am doing what I was born to do! Before essential oils came into my life, I was on a totally different trajectory. I was working in marketing, and I could’ve made a career out of that, but it wasn’t my passion. I wasn’t helping people. I wasn’t feeling fulfilled.
No one tells you to quit your job that has career potential to become a barista part-time while you build something you’re passionate about. No one tells you to work crazy hours to support yourself while squeezing your business into the cracks because it’s worth it, even though it’ll take awhile to pay off. No one tells you to work jobs that are rewarding but don’t pay much until you can take your own business full-time. Most people would think it’s crazy to take some of the leaps of faith that I have, but I’ve done all of those things at various times in my life while I’m building my dream.
As I have grown personally, I have come to realize that it’s more important to me to do things that are rewarding and fulfilling rather than things that may pay more but drain me energetically and don’t feel right in my soul.
I know essential oils are not my only purpose, as I am drawn to healing work in general and plan to expand my offerings in the future to include reiki and other modalities that can help people along their spiritual and physical wellness paths, but essential oils will always be one of my favorite tools and I will never stop sharing their benefits either others!
