We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Matthew DeRubertis a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
In my early career as an artist, I learned quickly that resilience and consistency are a must. With a career in music, many things will not pan out as planned. There will be a lot of hard work to bring visions to life. Successes may not come where you expect them to. Opportunities pop up, then vanish. The only way to make it through such a shifting landscape is an inner sense of resiliency, consistency, and connection to your personal mission.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Up till 2020, I was doing music full time. COVID allowed me to branch out, develop new skills, and diversify my career.
In music, I’ve been developing my original project titled SEER MUSIC. It’s ambient instrumental music inspired by my journeys in nature and in consciousness. I am also producing & collaborating with other artists in this style, while continuing my career as a sideman bassist.
I have opened my practice serving Kambô medicine, a traditional Amazonian purgative medicine used for physical detoxing and spiritual healing purposes. This has been very powerful and rewarding. My journey with Kambô began with coming to the medicine for my own healing in 2019, and then mentoring with my teacher overseeing many case studies. Bring this medicine to north east Ohio where I live has been a beautiful way to serve.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Curiosity – In order to develop in anything, to deepen knowledge and mastery, one has to be curious. Following my natural sense of curiosity has led to many new and satisfying career openings. Basically if you’re bored, it’s your fault. There’s so much to explore, and it’s up to you to find what excites you and moves you in new discovery.
Commitment – Sticking with your vision despite the challenges. Developing a business, a practice, or skill set will take time and have ups and downs. A solid internal commitment offered me the strength to move through the vicissitudes of life.
Adaptability – Do to the changing nature of any industry, I’ve had to adapt my ways of working to create more success. Sometimes this is hard as new systems have to be built. The trick is to learn how to adapt while retain one’s integrity to their mission.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Dune.
I was absolutely captivated by this sense of a character stepping into a much broader, bigger destiny for himself, even if it scared him. Reading this story gave me the courage to step out on to a new path, even if I was very very uncertain as to how things would turn out.
That was 5 years ago, and I have no regrets. It’s been a beautifully unfolding journey and will continue to be!
