Meet Allison Bettes

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Allison Bettes. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Allison below.

Allison , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I found my purpose by changing who I was living and working for. When you do things because you are comparing yourself to others, imposter syndrome is sure to follow (in many aspects of life, not just being an author). As my son got older, I realized I wanted to do things that made ME happy and made ME proud, so that he would see that you create your own happiness. If you chase a dream and accomplish it because it is something YOU wanted to do, it will make you far happier than chasing a dream and accomplishing something that someone else wanted you to do. I want my son to know that it doesn’t matter if your book only sells five copies instead of five thousand….if publishing a book was your dream, then selling five books still accomplished that. Changing that outlook gave me a new purpose for how to view things in life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a meteorologist and science writer by day, and romantic suspense writer in my spare time. I enjoy writing about women in STEM careers because it’s a fun way to connect my real life to my fiction novels. I am also a wife and mother to both two-legged and four-legged children.
Starting in January 2026 I have a brand-new romantic suspense series coming out that features all the female main characters in STEM related jobs. This touches close to home for me and I cannot wait for people to be able to read this next series.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The most important thing to me is to just do it. The first time you try something, it likely will not be your best, but it’s a step in the right direction to whatever goal you have. If you want to be an author, then just write. Some people hesitate because they don’t have all of the plot details worked out in their head beforehand, but many writers don’t. We just sit down and write and let the story come to life. If you wait until all the small details are all worked out, you may never sit down to write the book. Same goes for starting your own small business, or beginning a podcast, etc.
We’ve all heard that patience is a virtue, but it’s also a very hard skill to achieve. But for many things in life you cannot rush them. Be patient, especially when it can affect the quality of whatever you are working on (book, project, etc.). Some days my brain is raring to go and I can write five-thousand words and love all of them. Other days, my brain is not firing on all cylinders and I am lucky if I can type out 50 words. Keeping yourself focused and patient is key.

We’ve all got limited resources, time, energy, focus etc – so if you had to choose between going all in on your strengths or working on areas where you aren’t as strong, what would you choose?

If you only ever do things that you KNOW you are good at, you may never know what things you MIGHT be good at. Thirty years ago, no one was good at pickleball because pickleball wasn’t really a popular sport then. Think of all the people who took a chance and tried something new and found out they were good at it. I think people who are more well-rounded do themselves a favor because not only do they know their strengths, but they also know their weaknesses and areas where they need to improve.
