Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Cami SanRomani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Cami, thank you so much for making time for us. We’ve always admired your ability to take risks and so maybe we can kick things off with a discussion around how you developed your ability to take and bear risk?
I started Cami’s Cake Co. as a mix of passion and necessity. I loved creating and developing my skills, but I had to find a way to make a living in a very tough business. I took a huge risk leaving my full time job and going all in on Cami’s Cake Co., but at the time we didn’t have much to risk. We were young and broke anyway, so it took a little of the fear away. I started investing in my business little by little. I never took out huge loans and we built the bakery brick by brick. I knew so clearly where I wanted to go, I just had to be patient and invest in equipment as I was able. Now when I face any new opportunity – whether expanding my services or pitching to new corporate clients, I see risk as a part of growth. Not something to fear.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
What’s most exciting about Cami’s Cake Co. is how personal my job feels – no matter the client. We do intimate baby showers, weddings, and so many big milestones as well as huge corporate clients and sports teams. Every order is special to me and I am honored that people trust in me and my skills. My favorite thing in the world is a repeat customer. It means the world to me.
The most exciting thing happening in my business right now is the premier of my new TV show on the Food Network called Sweet Empire! I am so thrilled to join a cast of 14 of the best cake, chocolate and sugar artists to compete for $50,000! Sweet Empire airs every Sunday at 8pm central time.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My three best qualities are:: my ability to self-promote, my grit and determination to see projects through and my work/home life balance in raising three kids while building a business. I’ve built this business by confidently sharing my story and connecting with people authentically. I am not afraid of putting in the hours necessary to get the job done properly and I take immense pride in showing my kids that it’s possible to chase big goals while staying grounded. You can go after any dream.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
My husband has been the biggest support through the past 15 years of growing this business. He is often silent in his strength, but without him none of this would be possible. He often comes to the bakery after a long day at his own job to help clean or take out the trash or have a simple meal with me while I am working a late night. I always want him to know how much those small things are appreciated. He picks up my slack when I am away filming a show or traveling to teach a class or just working on a huge project. He listens without judgement and really holds me up when I feel like I am failing – which as a small business owner, seems more often than not. There were many times when I should have quit and he always supported me. No matter what.
