We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alicia Thomas a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alicia, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
As a creative and community artist, I keep my creativity alive by constantly learning, connecting, and exploring new ways to bring creative art enrichment into people’s lives. Every class, every conversation, and every craft night reminds me why creativity is meant to be shared. It fuels me to see joy in others with the creative spaces I created.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I own Craft Connections which is a mobile creative art enrichment company. I travel out to schools, organizations, corporate spaces, retreats, and community centers just to name a few, whereas I provide hand on art projects that boosts creativity, social interaction, mental wellness, and more importantly fun. I am based out of Indianapolis, Indiana and I travel all throughout the surrounding areas of central Indiana. I have participants do a wide range of activities such as clay sculptures, canvas painting, dough/slime, magnets. You name it, they’ve created it. I get contracted out to these spaces to spread my creative art ideas to all ages and abilities. It’s a pleasure to see children and even adults face light up as they are creating something they’ve never thought they would sit down and take the time out to do. Or families bringing me into their homes to do the dirty work (laughs) of providing all the materials, setting up, leading the activity, and cleaning up. I am enjoying the career that I set forth for myself and I know that soon, Craft Connections will be a household name.
While I still want the community to craft, I host a monthly Craft Club for ages 21 and up. It’s December 20th and it’s called Santa’s Workshop from 4p-6p at 1525 Prospect St. Indianapolis, IN (https://craftconnectionsindy.square.site/events). Ugly sweaters are encouraged. Dressing up, laughing, and crafting is so amazing to me. We’re unlocking confidence, connection, and calmness. That’s what makes craft club special. There’s a lot going on in the world today, so we need that quick unplug to bond with friends and family and craft. It helps others and I disconnect from the world for the moment to experience joy.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three most qualities that were impactful during my journey. Number one would be practice. Yes I found my niche but I’d like to practice and get good at it. You can’t learn something in one day and boom put out an ebook or host a class. You have to do the work first. You have to experience first hand before offering your product or service to the community. That lets them know that you care, you’re in it because you have a passion for it, hence to keep doing the work. Secondly, stepping out on Faith. The willingness to host an event no matter if one person show up or you have a full house. Having that mentality will go far. Because if you keep going, you will be seen, and you will be heard. Keep stepping out on faith to promote you, your brand, they will see it. Lastly, creativity. What can set you aside from the others. Reverting back to doing the work; how are you standing out in the community? From your brand colors, how you represent yourself in public and online, having that welcoming spirit and just being genuine will truly guide you to the route of success.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for individuals to partner and collaborate with. I say this because people from the community love love love to donate crafts to me. Which I am very thankful for, my storage unit is full of crafts. I’m looking to partner with venue owners, community centers, schools who value community impact and creativity. Those people who would love to see their spaces used for something meaningful. These are owners who believe in giving back and would be open to offering donated or reduced-cost spaces for events that bring people together through art, wellness, and connection. By partnering with Craft Connections, they’re not just hosting, they’re helping create accessible, inclusive creative experiences that strengthen community ties and make their space part of something bigger than business. I’d love to connect as I am on LinkedIn and social media platforms (Craft Connections)
