We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lawrence Hauptly a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Lawrence, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Right after high school I had the opportunity to work in a chiropractic office, helping with whatever needed to be done. It was there, in that office, that I saw miracles each and every day as patients healed from all sorts of issues and diseases… even many of the incurable diseases fell into remission while patients were under chiropractic care. That started me down the path to becoming a chiropractor myself. It really wasn’t till a few years later, when my third child was born that I really began to understand my full calling and purpose. For context, you have to understand that at the time of his birth, my wife was a childbirth educator and birth doula. Most of our friends were birthworkers or chiropractors. That entire pregnancy my wife recieved chirorpactic care from some of the most reknown prenatal chiropractors in the country, had the best nutrition and fitness programs we could find, and we planned this birth to be perfect. Long story short, we stacked the deck in our favor to have the most amazing births ever, and to be honest, that is exactly how the birth went. It was gentle, effective, and nothing short of the miracle that birth can and should be. Even with all that, my son was struggling to breath upon birth. After listening to his lungs, both the midwife and I agreed that he had fluid in his left lung that was making things harder than normal. I decided that I needed to check to see if my son needed a chiropractic adjustment. He did, and so I gave him his first adjustment right there and then. Immediately as the adjustment was taking place, my son coughed hard, looked up at me, I swear he smiled at me, and then melted into a perfect puddle… fully relaxed and happy. His lung was completely clear and he went from surviving to thriving in an instant. That is when it hit me. This was as close to a perfect birth that I could imagine, and even still, my son needed an adjustment to thrive. To this day, I can only imagine how much more most newborns need to be checked and adjusted properly after their births, especially if their birth wasn’t as perfect as my sons. That connection to life itself that my son experienced in that moment is what I want for all infants, and is why I do what I do each and every day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a family wellness chiropractor and owner of Flow Chiropractic in Lehi, UT. As such, I see a lot of pregnant women, infants, children, teens, and parents too. We believe that the most amazing and abundant life comes from being fully connected… connected to ourselves, connected to our family, and connected to our community. We know that the body is designed to heal itself, but in order for that healing potential to be realized, the body has to follow a very precise program. That program is run by they brain and nervous system, much like a central command center for the body. Often the various stresses of modern day life create interference within the nervous system, and the brain looses its ability to fully control every part of the body. This allows dysfunction and eventually disease to set in. As a chiropractor my number one job is to clear your nervous system of this interference, to reconnect the body to the brain. This unlocks the body’s own healing potential and that dysfunction and disease turns into optimal function and ease. By connecting the body and brain, I am really connecting you to more of yourself, and you thrive when you are connected.
Very few healthcare providers focus on what I focus on. Too often our healthcare system focuses on getting rid of the ailments we have and don’t want. As a chiropractor, I get to focus on the getting more of the health we want and don’t have. On the surface, that may sound like two ways of saying the same thing, but I beg to differ. Just as there is a big difference between being rich rather than just not poor, or between being happy rather than just not sad, there is a big difference between being healthy rather than just not sick. Modern medicine is fantastic at keeping people alive when they are on the very edge of life. Where modern medicine struggles is in growing and supporting complete health and wellness. That is where I come in as a family wellness chiropractor. Medicine is like the firefighters coming in to save the house from fully burning down, while chiropractic is like the builder that comes in to rebuild the house back to its former glory. Don’t get me wrong, I am very thankful to have the firefighters (medicine) there. I just don’t call the fire department when i need a repair on my home.
The reason I focus so much on prenatal and pediatric care in my office is simple. Often these interferences within the body and nervous system begin early in life. Research shows that most (if not all) of newborns have this interference in their system from birth. As much as birth is truly amazing, it is hard. It is hard on mom, and it is hard on baby. This struggle to enter life, is in effect, an overwhelming stress that the newborn’s brain and nervous system can’t deal with all on its own. The result is a nervous system filled with interference and disconnection. While this interference may not have immediate effects, its is much like a small snowball starting to roll down a hill. As time passses, that snowball grows bigger and bigger, until at some point it is like an avalanche, ready to take out anthing in its path. This is the point where symptoms begin to appear. My logic asks, why wait till the avalanche has formed and we are on the verge of disaster? Why not deal with the problem back when it was still a small and simple snowball? So that is what we do at Flow Chiropractic.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
1. Faith in the design of the body, and its ability to heal itself. When it comes to health, we don’t need an outside help, rather we need a more complete expression of internal wisdom.
2. Enough boldness and confidence to stand against the popular current and to think differently. As I’ve stated previously, mainstream medicine has its strengths and weaknesses. Being willing to offer a different option in healthcare occasionally means disagreeing with the majority. Not always, but there are definite times where my professional opinion differs from what most people think.
3. A love and compassion to serve others. Entreprenuership and owning a small business is not for the faint of heart, yet that is exactly what has allowed me to reach more of my community and to have a hand in saving the lives of my patients. My concern for my patient’s wellbeing has to be greater than the stresses of business ownership or I wouldn’t keep going.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The individual that has had the biggest impact on me professionally is my mentor and good friend, Dr Kristina Kill. I first met Dr Kristina when she was my professor at chiropractic school. Over the last several years I’ve had the opportunity to work with her very closely in practice working with patients and in teaching other chiropractors how to be more successful themselves and advancing their clinical skills. She gave me the safe place to learn from my mistakes, the tough love of a true friend when I needed correction, and so much more. There is no question that I would not be where I am and I would not be able to touch as many lives as I do without her guidance along the way.
