Meet Tenisha Smith

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Tenisha Smith. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Tenisha below.

Tenisha, thank you so much for joining us today and appreciate you talking about a sensitive topic. It’s unfortunately relevant to so many in the community as layoffs have been on the rise recently, and so we’d appreciate hearing your story and how you overcame being let go?

I was able to overcome losing my job by choosing action over fear. In the middle of an intensive Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program, the company I had worked for two years suddenly went out of business. At first, it was shocking, and I felt like the rug had been pulled out from under me. But I realized this unexpected moment didn’t have to define me it could actually push me forward.

The hardest part for me as a Family Nurse Practitioner was not being able to see patients. Caring for people is at the heart of why I became a nurse, and suddenly losing that daily connection was difficult. But I used that time to give back in a different way hosting health pop-up events, sharing resources, and connecting with people who might not otherwise have access to care. Even outside the clinic, I found ways to continue serving and making an impact.

I focused on finishing my program, building my brand, serving my community, and expanding my professional network. Each step gave me purpose, momentum, and confidence. By leaning into growth and trusting the process, what initially felt like a setback became a season of opportunity and personal and professional development. That chapter became closure it marked the end of one season and the beginning of a new one where I could fully step into my calling.

During this period, I was also accepted into the Johnson & Johnson and Duke University Nurse Entrepreneur Program, which gave me clarity, confidence, and the perfect opportunity to focus fully on what I wanted to create.

Looking back, I am profoundly grateful. Losing that job was not an end it was a turning point. Life’s unexpected moments can be opportunities in disguise. When we embrace them, lean into growth, and trust the process, setbacks can become launching pads for success, purpose, and fulfillment.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m Tenisha Smith, FNP-C, PMHNP-BC, a dual-certified Nurse Practitioner with over 20 years of experience in healthcare. Through my practice, iCare Integrated Health Solutions, I provide compassionate, evidence-based care that addresses both physical and mental health needs.

At iCare, I offer psychiatric initial evaluations, medication management, chronic care support, health consultations and lab reviews, mental health education, wellness coaching, and mentorship for Nurse Practitioner students. What makes my work truly special to me is my focus on education and awareness. I noticed a significant gap in patient understanding, so I make it a priority not just to treat individuals but to educate them about their health. I explain lab results, the purpose behind each test, and involve patients in their treatment plans. By raising awareness early, we can often prevent serious outcomes, and I love empowering my patients to be active participants in their care.

At the heart of my practice is a simple belief: iCare about your healthcare needs. My approach is different because I genuinely care, combining clinical expertise with a commitment to teaching and empowering the people I serve. My goal is to make healthcare accessible, meaningful, and collaborative helping patients understand their health, take control of their wellness, and achieve the best possible outcomes.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three qualities have shaped my journey most profoundly: resilience, a commitment to growth, and compassion. Resilience carried me through moments I never expected like losing a job in the middle of an intensive program teaching me that setbacks are not failures but opportunities to grow. A commitment to growth and lifelong learning fueled my desire to expand my skills, earn dual certifications, and build a practice that could truly meet patients’ physical and mental health needs. And above all, compassion the ability to connect deeply with others has been my guiding light, allowing me to empower patients, mentor students, and make a lasting impact in my community.

For those just starting their journey, my advice is simple: embrace the challenges, stay dedicated to learning, and never underestimate the power of caring deeply. Success is not only what you achieve but how you lift others along the way. When you show up with heart, remain teachable, and use every experience good or bad to learn and grow, you’ll create a path that is meaningful, fulfilling, and uniquely yours.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was teach me the value of perseverance and integrity, while also providing a happy, loving home where I always felt safe and supported. They modeled hard work, discipline, and honesty in everything they did, showing me that success is not just about talent, but about commitment, character, and staying true to your values even when it’s hard.

They also gave me the gift of unwavering belief in myself. No matter the challenges I faced, they reminded me of my potential and encouraged me to pursue my dreams with confidence. That combination of discipline, resilience, belief, and a nurturing home has guided me through every step of my personal and professional journey, shaping not only the nurse practitioner I am today but the person I strive to be every day.
