We recently connected with Matthew Orlando Miller and have shared our conversation below.
Matthew Orlando , so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
The beauty of every industry is that homage “paving the way” is present in every chapter of that industry’s evolution. I believe you have a greater responsibility when you’re in rooms that lack representation, and I’ve taken that responsibility very seriously because I’ve met mentors along my career who’ve ensured they’ve been extremely productive in those spaces to create more opportunities for me. That whole cause and effect is progress.
Then, my thought process shifts to impact. I feel recognized when I have opportunities to contribute, so throughout my career, I’ve dedicated my focus to the task at hand, regardless of the room. My sole focus is on the results. When you produce and positively impact the outcome, the leverage you gain gives you the stake to decide who’s in the room next time. So, it also boils down to whether you’re good at what you do.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Matthew Orlando Miller, and I am the CEO of COLOUR LLC, as well as an investor and senior leader in technology. I recently had the opportunity to return home and concentrate on my multidisciplinary creative agency, which is particularly special because it allows me to have a more direct impact on my community here in Chicago and really bridge the gap between relationships established in New York and Los Angeles.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Imagine the unimaginable. To succeed in any field, it’s crucial to have ideas that others perceive as unrealistic. This sets you apart, as imagery sparks innovation. When you only see as far as the norm, you create ordinary solutions that elicit ordinary responses.
Your business plan is only as strong as your understanding of self. Know who you are, your strengths, character, personality, and be unwavering regardless of circumstances. When you don’t compromise your identity, you find yourself in spaces that appreciate authenticity, which is extremely safe and allows you to do your best work. You also shed the spaces that feel, you know the opposite.
Be extremely excited about failure; view failure as a unique opportunity for modification or enhancement. The greatest athletes studied their craft and found success due to being on the other side of unfavorable scenarios so many times that they used these experiences to create a road map to success. Spectators only remember who won; the best athletes remember everything.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I always enjoy connecting and collaborating, and we’re actively engaged in the digital media and corporate sectors.
