Meet Jean C Nunez

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jean C Nunez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Jean C , thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?

God first, and my family. Sometimes it’s not a matter of self discipline, is a matter of compromise, you have to practice to make your skill grow, improve your life by working out and heal your soul through prayer!

The idea of making god and my family happy, gives me that extra push when I’m with low batteries.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I was born in Venezuela, and to make a long history short, I was raised by parents that were so into rock and roll, they always listened to Guns N Roses, Aerosmith, Metallica and many other amazing bands, so rock and roll and English language were always part of my life.

when I was a teenager and still in school I grabbed a guitar for the first time and it was unconditional love since the beginning , when my parents decided to give me my first electric, I knew that was it. So I self taught my way into playing the music I loved.

After I came out of high school, my parents enlisted me on the Tecnologico Música Valencia (tmv) and with the professional help of their teachers and private lessons I became a better musician and a professional.

It is until this day that I carry their instructions to future generations, because I’ve gotten my own students as well! It’s a beautiful never ending chain!

As a musician, what can I say, God has really been very good to me, he allowed me to play with the best of the best in Venezuela, winning battle of the bands contest, playing at big festivals, recording albums for bands that i was part of and arranging other artists songs. Every experience has a special place in my heart it’s always good to look back and remember.

If you told me 15 years ago that I was going to be playing shows in the United States, I wouldn’t believe it! But once again, God gave me the opportunity to play not just with my own band but also playing with international stars and Grammy winners and nominees! Music has given me so much and the best that I can do is to keep pushing myself to see where this goes… but as long as I have my guitar, I WILL ALWAYS BE HAPPY.

As a professional musician there are always gigs to play I get calls to play in parties, weddings, corporate events and even restaurants.

This year has been very productive for me as a professional, I got enlisted in the Latin Grammys Academy and member of ASCAP and for the first time I made my debut as a solo artist and wrote a song called “Be Rude” and I’m very proud of it not just because is my vision of rock and roll and blues as my influences, but because my song made its way to the Semi Finals on the 30th United States Songwritting Competition! Hopefully one day I can come back for other interview with the gold.

My band Waterplant is making its own name by giving music with original style, and with crazy energetic shows charged with so much 90s influences. Right now as we speak, the band is cooking its 2nd studio album to be released in 2026. In the meantime, the band is already giving shows that get bigger in crowd and exposure every time, last November 15 we got booked to give a big show at the Miami Fair Grounds! And we are very excited to make music and make our way to the top. I can assure you that you will be hearing more from us!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1. Always put God first, sometimes to know that maybe your effort may not be enough is OK, praying can give you energy to walk that extra mile that separates you from your goal.

2. Practice. Study. Improve your skills: it may sound cliché, but it is what it is, the world is more competitive every year, so try to not get too comfortable, get out of your safe zone and push yourself to summon your talent at will and not to fold under pressure.

3. Keep your word: in music, business and relations, you have to always keep your word! Makes doors to open and remain open, you never know what crazy turns the life may take!

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

Getting me my first guitar, music has been nothing but joy, learning and self developing. So I would like to thank my parents for all the support and I hope that everyone in this world have at least one person that blindly believes in what they want to do with their lives!
