Meet Miki Garcia

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Miki Garcia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Miki, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?

Sometimes I honestly forget how I look! Having lived most of my life in Europe, I’ve experienced a different dynamic compared to the US. Cities like London, Paris, and Amsterdam can feel quite diverse, whereas in many parts of the US—outside major urban areas—you can quickly find yourself in a “you versus them” situation.

When I lived in California for 8 years, I became very aware of how strongly demographic identities, such as race and ethnicity, shape people’s experiences. How you look can influence so many things. In Europe, identity has historically been tied more to class, although of course racial distinctions and subtle forms of bias still exist.

Because I’ve lived in several countries and speak multiple languages, I’ve been thinking about identity my whole life. And one of the most important lessons I’ve learned about being effective—especially when you’re the only one in the room who looks like you—is to stay rooted in your purpose and mission. When you focus on why you’re there and what you want to contribute, your identity becomes a source of strength rather than a barrier.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I’ve been writing all my life—as both a journalist, an author and a script writer. I originally became a journalist because I wanted to tell humanitarian stories from around the world. I later earned a PhD in Irish radical history, which is my greatest passion, and that’s why so much of my work focuses on Irish immigrants and their experiences.

I’ve published six books so far, all rooted in the themes of Irish diaspora history. I completed my degrees in London, and living there—surrounded by such a large Irish community—deepened my interest in the Irish experience within the British Empire. As an immigrant myself, I’ve always been drawn to stories of migration, identity, and belonging.

My latest book, The Irish Freedom/Irish Democrat: An Immigrant Newspaper in London 1939–1973 – Campaigning for a United Ireland, explores activist journalism and the role of the Irish community in shaping political discourse. I also create videos about Irish history on my YouTube channel. (https://www.youtube.com/@garciamiki )

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Passion, perseverance, and confidence are truly important. When you care deeply about something, it becomes easier to stay committed and to believe in yourself—and the skills and knowledge you need will naturally grow over time.

If you’re still not sure what your passion is, start by gently removing the things you know you don’t want in your life. Clarity often comes from clearing space. It can be difficult to follow your heart, especially when you’re navigating peer pressure or other people’s doubts, but remember: you have your own unique mission in this world. Try not to let external noise discourage or distract you from discovering it.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I believe that in the Age of Aquarius, collaboration and sharing are more important than ever. Of course, I’d love for film producers to pick up my scripts! I’m also very open to all kinds of creative partnerships, especially as AI and other technologies continue to evolve.

I want to leave this world with a sense of accomplishment and the knowledge that I contributed something meaningful. Through my books and other creative work, I hope to advocate for positive change and inspire others. And by collaborating with people, I know I can reach an even wider audience and make an even greater impact.
