Meet Jamelle Flowers

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jamelle Flowers a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamelle , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

I think imposter syndrome hits all of us at some point or another. Even some of the biggest and most successful people have openly talked about battling imposter syndrome at some point in their lives. For me, knowing who I am and who God has created me to be grounds me. Keeping in mind that your journey is yours alone and knowing that I am right where I am supposed to be, always helps redirect me when those thoughts come up.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I’m an actor, singer and all around artist. I’ve always been into the arts growing up. I was a young singer and musician growing up in my family’s church. That’s where my roots are. My father sings and my mother also grew up in music. Her father was a musician in the military. It’s always been such a large part of who I am. Outside of music I’m also an actor, playing in several films that have done well. I remember the first time ever seeing myself on the big screen or seeing a billboard with my album on it overlooking the city. It was an incredible feeling. I recently released my 3rd album entitled The Wolf. It’s currently available for purchase on the Bandcamp app or Bandcamp.com.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Focus, integrity, passion! Those 3 things will take you far in this business. I would a person to focus on your goals and how you can improve. Don’t look at others but focus on what you do and what you want to achieve. Have integrity in how you handle your business. Pay people properly, do what you said you’re going to do and treat people right. Lastly, be passionate about what you do. Do it even if no one paid you and if no large crowd applauds.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?

They taught me to pray! I have had challenges like anyone else. Financial challenges, employment challenges, health challenges, housing challenges, you name it. I have faced it all but one thing my parents always taught me was to pray. Not to say that prayer immediately changes a situation but it gives a sense of peace having faith that somehow, someway things will work out for me. I’m grateful they taught me that.
