We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Robin Litrenta a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Robin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I appreciate a good story especially as it relates to people and their history. As a kid, I loved when extended family members visited. We sat around the kitchen table while my parents and relatives reminisced about their childhoods. I hung onto every word. I saw the stories as part of my fabric and it gave me a greater understanding of where my parents came from as people. Those stories were priceless then, and more so today, especially since my parents are now gone.
Once I established my photography business, I realized I was doing more than making beautiful portraits; I was creating people’s visual legacies. Who we are, how we love, how we connect and show up for our special people is infused in every photo I make. It’s not only my purpose, but also my honor to make legacy portraits for families to cherish today and pass down to their future generations.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My business is client-centered and focused on relationship building while offering a full-service experience. It’s important for my clients to have a stress-free experience from preplanning their photography session through delivering finished portraits for display in their homes. Clients trust my guidance in helping them select the perfect location to suit their needs. I also guide them on what to wear and then lead them in memory making during their portrait session. My goal is to give them an hour of joyful time of family togetherness where everyone plays, laughs and lets go of the ‘rules’ for just a little bit.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
From a business perspective: implementing systems, obtaining business insurance and a business license were key. From a creative perspective: studying and understanding light, noticing people’s interactions with each other and understanding my clients’ goals. These are some key elements which help establish a new photographer as a professional.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal client is someone who appreciates the power of a photograph to tell a story, especially their own. It doesn’t matter if the photo is a formal portrait or a candid moment. There is a story of belonging, of love, of intimacy, of victory over strife; even how we live our day. My ideal clients understand this and hire me to tell THEIR unique stories. They trust me to help print their photos and make albums which become their legacy to future generations. There is a big difference between reminiscing over photos in a magnificent album with your loved one by your side vs flipping through photos on your phone. My ideal client values this difference and is grateful when I hand them their heirloom album and framed portraits for their walls.
