We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Alana Amore Colvin a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alana amore, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
At some point I started to realize how uncomfortable I was living in the world for others. Acting, speaking, and carrying myself in a way that I thought might please others. It only resulted in failure or embarrassment and not one person on the planet was making any gesture to make me more comfortable in any space at any time. But there were times were I felt alive, good, and emboldened and I began to take note of when that was. I felt good when I made someone laugh, I felt good with short hair, I felt good saying “No.” and not elaborating any further, I felt good showing skin. I felt good organizing and planning. I felt good when I sat down and I made something beautiful and I felt just as a good when I made something ugly. I became a fan of myself. It’s very difficult seeing yourself from the inside out but its in that position that you get to really stop and observe.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an afro-folkloroic avant-garde guitarist and composer based in Brooklyn, NY! I just realized a very quiet and soft record called Huckleberries & Lullabies! It’s out everywhere except Spotify! The record goes great with a cup of coffee

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I am incredibly stubborn, open-minded, and determined. Every woman in my family shares these traits. I got them honest but if I was to suggest how one may develop these qualities I’d say the key is standing on what you believe. If its important to you fight for it and there’s more than one way to fight.

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My community. My village. I have stumbled into a community that does not let its members fall. We talk. We support. We show up. We listen. It is a privilege and I wish I could explain more but it is something that I simply fell into and I am eternally grateful for the people around me.
