We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Destin Mckenzie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Destin, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
I get my resilience from honestly listening to music that hypes me up, watching my favorite action/super hero movies, & working out. I work 4 days in a week & on my off days, I want to just relax. Sometimes I get to the point when I’m too relaxed, almost getting lazy & I get to the point that I don’t want to do anything knowing I have a few things to do. I’ll be honest I’m not perfect, there are days that I don’t get everything done on my off days. Sometimes I do get frustrated, overwhelmed, mentally drained, & stressed out. But I always make sure that I don’t stay in that boat forever. So what do I do when I’m at my lowest? I listen to music. Especially when I go workout. My go to genres of music when I resilience is hip-hop, & heavy metal rock music. Ever since a kid, listening to music while doing my errands, tasks, & workouts, keeps me going. Also when I’m at my lowest, I’ll go watch my favorite action movies like “Spider-man,” “BatMan” ” Rush Hour” & so much more to pump me up & keep me motivated. I noticed & learned most super hero’s they fall down at their weakest moment, but they always make sure they bounce back and complete the mission or stop a villain. Last but not least, I work out as much as I can. I go to the gym, & go walking/jogging outside at a park I go to all the time. Running really boost me up, I feel like a super hero gaining more power. No matter what situation I go through thats challenging, I always bounce back and continue to finish.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Destin McKenzie, I’m currently from Florence South Carolina. I work in Mcleod hospital as a patient transporter, I’m a travel advisor ( travel agent), a musician artist, & actor. I worked in Mcleod hospital for technically nine years. When I was fifteen years old, I started volunteering there for the summer for three years. In 2019, I officially started working at Mcleod hospital as a patient transporter & work there to this day. When I was eighteen years old, I started my travel business. I became a home based travel advisor & still running my business to this day. I started acting actually when I was six years old. My first acting role was a character name Sam in a “Beauty & The Beast” play by Maggie Wallace Glover. Years later when I was seventeen years old, after graduating high school, I started making comedy skits & working on having my own production company soon. In 2022, I started working on movie & TV show sets as a background actor in Atlanta Georgia. Started taking acting classes in 2023. Shot my first movie in Rocky Mountain North Carolina this year called “JustUs: The Underrated Scapegoats” produced & created by KJ Lyon. My characters name is Andre Taylor. The movie is out now on Vimeo. I will be working on more movies & TV shows coming soon! I also do music for fun. I started making music at the age of thirteen. I write my own lyrics, I use to rap on beats that I rock with, then years later, I started making my own beats. I rap & sing. I’m also in a R&B music group called “The Group BAM”. It’s me & my two friends Jerome Richardson III, & Clifton Davis. When I’m solo I rap mostly, but with the group, I sing bass & rap. I keep myself busy & staying creative.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I think the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that are most impactful in my journey is meditation, reading more books, & exercise. Meditation because it helps you free your mind off of negative, stress, or anything thats going on with your life. It also help you mentally prepare yourself for starting a new day. Meditation helps you stay calm no matter what situation you’re dealing with. As an adult, I am learning and doing my best to read more. Mainly to exercise my brain, & I’m an actor now so reading helps out a lot. Doing exercise helps me to stay pumped up & energized. My advice for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve meditation, reading, & exercise is to be consistent with it. Or just find/ plan a perfect time in your day to do these activities. The more you do these activities, the better it will be.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Yes I am looking for folks to partner/collaborate with. I’m looking for people who love to travel , strong minded, have a big goal they want to achieve, wants financial freedom, time freedom., & want to leave a legacy for their family.
