Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmine Lavette Barton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Jasmine Lavette , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
When I think about my purpose and how I found it the first thing that comes to mind is Matthew 22:14 “Many are called but few are chosen”.
I have always been a seeker for enlightenment, and a follower of righteousness. Innately I was born with a compassion for all, an open heart and an unconditional lover. As a kid I was always thinking with depth and behaving from an internal space and an awareness that things are more than it appears. I was always on a journey to discover what my assignment was here on earth. I have always had a knowing that I was to find what I should be doing here.
Deep down I have always had an intuition that spoke louder than words and I had mostly followed it because the callings were so strong. It wasn’t until I had my one and only child Maxwell when I begin to make sure that each decision I made had to be intentionally chosen. I felt a deep sense that I needed to answer these core moral questions to know all that I needed to know so that I could lead by example and show Maxwell the way, the truth and the light. I felt it was my quest to know what I was doing here so I could guide him on this life journey to discover his own sooner than later.
I studied the Bible, listened to sermons from pastors I loved and pastors that had scandal. I learned about various religious practices, different folklores, self-help books, the law of attraction. I truly wanted to understand the many messengers that have become famous to follow. I meditate and chose to eliminate old belief systems that no longer served me. This journey to find my purpose led me back to who I was all along. After doing gift test, personality test, journaling and doing all the things my purpose was always right in front of me. I didn’t have to go far to find it; it was more like I had to take the journey to accept it as my purpose.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am an entrepreneur! I am a full-time Sisterlocks Consultant for almost a decade now! I have been doing hair since I was 10 years old. As I have learned more about systemic racism it became most important to have my career align with my beliefs and activism. I believe that God has created us all perfectly. As a black woman it has been super important to raise awareness on beauty, health and our true inner being by changing mindsets one strand at a time. To further explain – as I teach and guide each client on their natural hair journey I have the opportunity to enlighten and share awareness about who we are as a black people and ways that we can unify as a black culture. I foster an open and welcomed community where black people from all over the globe unite through a hairstyle that does not alter their natural hair texture. If you know anything about textured hair this can bring up many emotions and trigger many traumas. I get to be apart of that journey towards healing.
I am a 3 times self-published children’s book author. My first book titled “Saying No, Doesn’t Mean Never”, was written with the intention to guide families on a way to communicate the word no in a way that didn’t cause a negative emotion. My second book titled, “Ace Wins the Race with Dads Amazing Grace” was written to teach children and families how to navigate the challenges of learning and teaching a new skill with the focus on healthy communication. My third book titled, “ We Can Both Be Kings” was written to start from young teaching our young ones that there is room for us all to be great! Moving away from the crabs in a barrel analogy within our culture.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
First things first, never stop wanting to learn. My natural desire to learn is super impactful! It has caused me to continue to evolve. It allowed for me to learn from others who have skills I don’t naturally possess to enhance my knowledge.
Secondly, the skill to become comfortable with change has made the journey of life way more light and palatable. The one thing we can guarantee is that life is balanced with trials and triumphs and learning how to cope with the trials and celebrate the triumphs is a superpower!
Lastly, learning how to focus will grow anything you want from a seed to a forest. Focus is a skill that can be improved and once you garner that skill anything you put your focus to will become what you set out for it to be. To me focus is the core of manifestation.
In my early days, I would seek out individuals who had the skills, qualities and characteristics I wanted to hold within me. I studied their mindset so that I could too use their methods and strategies to achieve my goals and manifest my desires.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
In the last 12 months I have worked severely on discipline. My body weight fluctuates since I was a kid. I also never found success in maintaining a healthy body weight while in a relationship. I noticed that when I was single, I would devote my time to health and wellness. However, when in a relationship I would devote my time and attention to my partner and their needs.
This year I have made a great effort to be consistent in moving my body for fitness and mental health. I have held my self accountable for the knowledge that is within me. I spent so much time studying about ways to improve myself and now it was time to look and be the part. I put more focus on how to actually apply the skills I have learned so that I would align with the lifestyle I believed was best for me.
These efforts have greatly improved my confidence. Helped me to become more social and enjoy my work- life balance. My motto is now “Work hard, play harder!”
