We recently connected with Zachary Holcomb and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Zachary , thanks for sitting with us today to chat about topics that are relevant to so many. One of those topics is communication skills, because we live in an age where our ability to communicate effectively can be like a superpower. Can you share how you developed your ability to communicate well?
Effective communication has been integral to my success over the years. During high school, I honed my communication skills and learned the importance of listening by participating in the debate team, mock trial, and moot court.
Following high school, I joined the United States Marine Corps and had the opportunity to serve at Quantico. There, I taught crew-served weapons courses, which involved weekly meetings with senior leadership and monthly meetings at the Pentagon. This experience, at just 20 years old, significantly boosted my confidence and instilled in me the values of humility and professionalism. It greatly enhanced my abilities in presentation, delivery, and providing effective feedback.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Learning to embrace failure is essential in the pursuit of entrepreneurship, education, and life. Many people express their readiness to start a business or make a significant professional change, but their first concern is often, “What if I fail?” or “How will failure affect me?” While failure is an inevitable part of the process, defining it as such will only hold you back. Instead, focus on the opportunities that arise and the lessons learned from these experiences. Being measured and honest about the situation when something doesn’t work is the only way to improve continuously. Understanding that failure is a part of every business and learning to humble yourself throughout the process is a valuable skill that many people lack.
Mentorship is crucial for continued success. Surround yourself with individuals who can be constructively critical, encouraging, and inspiring. Seeking wisdom from those who have been in your position or who can provide a fresh perspective can make all the difference in pivotal decisions that could transform your business and, possibly, your life.
Faith is fundamentally the most important aspect of my life and my business. As a Christian, a man of God, a husband, and a father, my faith has been the cornerstone of my journey. Throughout both my business and personal life, I have faced numerous trials and tribulations. During these challenging times, grounding myself with sound principles and knowing where to seek resolution when confronted with fear, doubt, and failure has been crucial. There are no perfect days, quarters, or years in business. However, my faith has consistently provided me with the resilience needed to persevere. It has been the greatest source of strength, enabling me to navigate the unpredictable terrain of entrepreneurship and life.
I would encourage anyone early in their career to ground themselves. Understand that the commitment required for business success is not something that can be achieved overnight; rather, it is an ongoing process like many other aspects of life. Eliminating distractions and instilling discipline in various areas of your life will significantly help you accomplish your goals. Continuously re-evaluating your progress and being honest about what isn’t working is crucial. If something isn’t effective, be humble enough to acknowledge it and determine how you can fix it.
Additionally, keeping an eye on industry trends and understanding how technology will impact you and your business is essential. Building meaningful relationships based on integrity, professionalism, and respect will provide you with the greatest opportunities for success. Embrace the journey, remain adaptable, and never lose sight of the importance of continuous improvement and personal growth.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
“Choose Your Enemies Wisely” by Patrick Bet-David offers incredible insights into the power of networking and the essential values of building strong relationships in the business world. It emphasizes the importance of being mindful of how you treat others, as your actions and character can significantly impact your life.
In the business landscape, it’s critical to recognize that certain individuals will continuously cross your path. The way you interact with and treat these people can either pave the way for your success or contribute to your downfall. People are often more interconnected than we realize, and showing disrespect or a lack of perspective can have far-reaching consequences.
To thrive in your professional journey, it’s essential to stay grounded and maintain a level of respect and resolve in all your interactions. Treating people with dignity and consideration is paramount, as it not only reflects your character but also shapes your reputation and relationships. In essence, this book underscores the idea that the way you treat others can be a powerful determinant of your success in the business world.
