We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Manny Gonzalez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Manny below.
Manny, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My confidence and self-esteem took my entire life to develop, and is still a work in progress. At a young age, I realized that the only thing I could ensure regarding tasks, projects, and skills, was how prepared I was for them. As a kid I only really had to worry about school, so knowledge was one of my main focuses, and I succeeded at hounding that potential. With early success, I began to develop high confidence and self esteem that I later crafted and made a part of my personality. Nowadays, I yearn to utilize my confidence and self-esteem by putting myself in more demanding environments; however, it is not always needed, so to continue to grow and stay humble there are times I was to suppress it–which is a topic on it’s own we can touch on another time.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
My name is Manny and I am a Cinematographer and Gaffer based in Los Angeles, CA. I am super grateful to be able to do what I do as a career, but I also understand that it is a direct correlation of all the work I have put into being creative, and, more specifically, understanding business and implementing that into the film industry.
To be given a vision, or create one myself, and have the responsibility to craft and create the look of it, with its respectable boundaries and impediments, is a dream come true. At the end of the day, I like to call myself a proactive problem solver. I am only as confident as I am prepared, so I ensure that I am as prepared as I could possibly be–prepared for any problems that might arise, prepared to execute, shape, communicate, create, and repeat.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back, I am the most thankful for my curiosity and questioning. Since I was young I’ve always wanted to learn and experience more than what was given to me. I always wanted to ask more questions and understand how the world worked objectively, and why taste and aesthetics were subjective, but also widely agreed upon. As I got older I would always question my surroundings and their meaning. I was never content, so I left my hometown in search for the curious unknown. After a decade of questioning life and taking a blind eye into curious pathways, I landed where I am now. The beauty of those qualities is that the are going to keep me moving, questioning and moving onto the next stage of curiosities.

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
Since I essentially will always be working for a client, even when I am directing, this is a very important question. My ideal client is creative, knowledgable, communicative, patient, and friendly. I’ve always been good with people, and with executing what has to be done, especially when it comes to problem solving, but it always helps to be working with a client that is knowledgable and understands what our limitations and potentials are. If I am able to communicate and work with them creatively, solve problems together proactively and patiently, and have a great time doing it all, our limitations are endless.
