We recently had the chance to connect with Phil Thomas and have shared our conversation below.
Phil, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: What is a normal day like for you right now?
As an owner of a small business a normal day is waking up around 4:30 AM responding to emails and organizing the rest of the day. Recently throughout the day it’s been a lot about developing the new platform we just tested and the coordination it takes to run an online platform. When the weathers nice I try to sneak a couple walks in with my wife and usually finish with dinner and time spent with my Family.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
My background is in Structural Engineering and while I still consult on the side, I’ve been tasked with the unique opportunity to develop a sport within fitness. It is just naturally interesting because Reps Ahead is so simple but has so many different facets that make it so fascinating. We’ve done in person events and now are incorporating online events where athletes compete live online from all over the world in different locations. In our recent test of the Reps Ahead Live platform we had representation from 3 states in the US and 3 total countries (Malta in Europe, Mexico and the US). A platform that allows for this is completely unique and fundamentally Reps Ahead is a standalone format with a global presence. Make no mistake, there is a long way to go with this, but the interest is off the charts.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I’m the most ordinary person there is. There is absolutely nothing special about me. God revealed this concept to me through a dream, and he has been guiding me the whole way through the many ups and downs. If anything, it’s all about serving the world in a way that honors him.
What did suffering teach you that success never could?
Suffering fundamentally reveals who you are, like it or not. The way you respond to it is paramount and can shape who you are for the rest of your life. If it were not for the biblical example of Job and Heman, none of this would have been possible.
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
That fitness is the most important thing in life and is a good source to place your identity. It isn’t, you are going to get older! It is simply a tool that should complement your life, in my opinion.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. When have you had to bet the company?
Many times. Early on in the development of something like this, everything is a risk. There is no set business model for sports. You must be prepared to persevere and struggle by definition.
