Dori Staehle’s Stories, Lessons & Insights

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Dori Staehle. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Dori, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: Would YOU hire you? Why or why not?
Yes! Since I have a very varied background and skillset, I bring way more to the table than drumming sessions! When clients work with me, they receive mentoring, coaching, or consulting (depending on what’s needed), and loads of motivation and encouragement which helps them unlock their potential, so they can move forward FAST! In fact, 93% of my private clients have experienced a breakthrough in 8 sessions or less – at a fraction of the cost of traditional therapy or educational franchises. Plus, they find their joy! What’s not to like?

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
As the only Certified Drum Therapist in NC, I create customized, innovative, and holistic programs for kids and adults that are evidence-based, easy to do, and loads of fun! I specialize in those who are neurodivergent (ADHD, autistic, and gifted), or dealing with anxiety and stress, and also at-risk populations. I work virtually and in-person and hand drums can be provided. No drumming experience necessary! I’m also a speaker, author, and percussionist. Whether you’re attending a talk or a drumming program, you’re going to rock!

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
I was told that: 1) Girls don’t play drums, and 2) Musicians don’t make any money. These stuck with me for quite some time. However, at age 47, with no experience and no lessons, I became a percussionist in a rockin’ church band! This was the spark that ignited my career as a drum therapist. I’ve played in other bands as well.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
How much time do you have? Lol! Yes, there have been many times when I almost threw in the towel. One was after my accident in 2011 when all hope seemed lost. Other times were when it seemed like no one got what I do. I’ve bounced back multiple times. Still here. Still rockin’!

Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. What would your closest friends say really matters to you?
They know I have a passion for drumming and the health benefits it can provide. They also know that I have a strong faith and a heart for those who are struggling, especially youth. I don’t want anyone to give up! Everyone has potential. They just need to unlock it and find their own beat.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
I’ve done loads of research and experimentation in regards to ADHD. I’ve documented all of this, dating back to 1995, when I created my theory called “The Gifted/ADHD Connection.” I’m now seeing gifted traits in those with high-functioning autism. No one is talking about this! Maybe they haven’t figured it out yet or have no idea what giftedness really is. That may be my next book. Stay tuned!
