Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Mikey Candela of San Juan, Puerto Rico

We recently had the chance to connect with Mikey Candela and have shared our conversation below.

Good morning Mikey , we’re so happy to have you here with us and we’d love to explore your story and how you think about life and legacy and so much more. So let’s start with a question we often ask: What makes you lose track of time—and find yourself again?
Lately I’ve been writing screenplays and developing scripts for theater and that has me hooked! I find myself lost in thought creating worlds and characters that has developed into a new love for me. I am currently writing my second screenplay which has me excited.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I am Mikey Candela, a recording artist from Puerto Rico and actor. I write music in both English and Spanish, and most recently launched a song on my platforms. I am also working on writing movies and plays which is new to me but very exciting.

Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. What was your earliest memory of feeling powerful?
I remember when I started my solo career after I released a couple of songs, I went to the local radio station to pitch my music. The A&R loved it and booked me on their main stage at one of the biggest festivals in Puerto Rico. The crowd was as far as the eye could see, and I received so much great feedback from the crowd. It was also the first time I got my own trailer for me and my team.

Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
There have been many times I’ve thought about quitting, but someone always pulls me back. It has always been different people at different stages in my life, but I am super grateful to have them in my life. When a person tells me they love my music or they love what I do, it motivates me once more to get back into the creative phase.

So a lot of these questions go deep, but if you are open to it, we’ve got a few more questions that we’d love to get your take on. Is the public version of you the real you?
Not at all, I can say Mikey Candela is the one who goes out in public and the real me hangs out at home. It took me a while to realize that I’m two different people, but it’s proven to be healthy especially in my personal life.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: What are you doing today that won’t pay off for 7–10 years?
Apart from my music, I would have to say my screenplays. I am excited to pitch my movies and plays to studios and investors so hopefully within the next couple of years I can get traction behind my film projects and share them on the big screens and festivals.
