Life, Values & Legacy: Our Chat with Miquela Martinez

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Miquela Martinez. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Miquela, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
I believe others struggle with wholeness. Accepting themselves whole. We are multifaceted beings with many parts of ourselves that may be difficult to accept. Including our shadow parts of ourselves; feeling all of our emotions, being vulnerable, knowing our depths, being present in the now, struggle with overthinking, to slowing down to go within oneself and much more. Another part of being whole includes vulnerability. Embracing your heart and its deepest desires. To not stifle this with our intellect. We are conditioned to be logical and place the mind above all else. That leading from the heart is a weakness when there lies so much truth of you. It’s important to balance all aspects; the mind, body and spirit. To listen to not just the mind or leading a life of mind over heart. It’s incredibly important to live from your heart and to follow this. Your passions, joy and the light this brings to the world. This is an important part of you that should not be ignored, punished or shamed. It’s part of your uniqueness just as much as the darkest parts that can also stem from this. As your heart and whole of you includes a dark side. Darkness does not mean negative, just the unseen/unknown parts that exist within. Not yet known but waiting to be discovered, acknowledged and accepted. Your heart can be a great teacher. Your spirit comes to play with discernment, instinct and wisdom. It’s important to not override your inner knowing, it guides you everyday. In your choices, decisions and paths you take. Balancing all parts of you creates a safe space within, groundness in self and accepting yourself whole. Moving from a balanced place with the whole of you helps you move confidently in the world knowing you know who you are regardless if others accept or realize this. You take your power back.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, I’m Miq! I am a two-spirit individual from Kansas City, MO. I am a creative who works in the music/live event industry, a photographer, writer, energy worker and artist. My foundational basis is in love, truth, integrity and authenticity. I appreciate the privilege to co create with all I work with. I care about the liberation and freedom for all. I move through life with spiritual integrity and intention to create from a place of love in all aspects. I keep in mind what is beneficial to all involved without stifling needs, creative input, perspectives and fostering fairness. I move from the heart and thrive with my passions. Creative energy propels me through life. I’m in awe of all the creatives that share their light of work with world and the communities they build and share this with. It’s drawn me into the music industry, photography, in writing communities and so much more. The perspectives in each has been incredibly inspiring and beautiful to witness. I keep this in mind with creating myself and helping elevate others dreams and desires. It’s important to share this light we each possess, as you are truly unique. There is truly only one of you. We all possess gifts we are meant to share in this world and it’s important to share this in the means you deem appropriate. Your knowledge, light, creativity and love can help elevate others and the world. In my work and experience I place this importance in helping others grow and thrive. You can transform your challenges, experiences and pain into positive change and outcomes for self and your life. Especially through your creativity and sharing this. We have one life, give yourself the gift and opportunity of living from the heart, being the truth of you and manifesting your dreams and desires. Living in this truth is important as authenticity cannot be imitated. You’ll be amazed of embracing your full potential and what you can create in this life. You will meet so many people that will help you create your dreams. It’s worth following that inner knowing and will guide you through life, transformations, transitions in your work, dynamics, self and development. Persevere as there is always a way. Believe in yourself even if no one else does. An inner vision, dream you see can come to fruition. When there is a will, there is a way.

Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. What part of you has served its purpose and must now be released?
This is a wonderful question. As life is full of cycles, we have the opportunity to let go and release parts of ourselves as our life progresses. It’s a never ending / new beginnings through these cycles. Becoming more of who you truly are is a gift I hope to not take for granted when these opportunities rise. I have taken my experiences that shaped lessons that needed to be learned in the environments I have existed in and to finally release old beliefs, limitations, judgments to embrace and embody what I need to step forward in this new era of my life. I came face to face with many fears that resided deep within, realizing I have the strength and tools to overcome them in such a way that my values and integrity are intact, without emotional reaction and to be graceful in action. I am so grateful to have learned this and to apply this wisdom in my life in any circumstance. We have unseen opportunities presented more than we may realize at times, as they are gentle and require discernment and being present. To learn is a gift and to know myself deeper, to hold compassion and to evolve from the lessons and experiences in my life fulfilling their purpose and to finally release what I have outgrown is so enlightening and liberating. Realizing things truly work out for the best in the end, even if it may not seem as such at first. To trust the unknown and to have faith in self, has allowed me to hold the parts of myself in moments as I progress forward and what needs to be released in full in those cycles. By reflecting and seeing so many parts of myself that served their purpose in those years of my life leading to today have given me the solid foundation I have within. It’s taught me to also apply this in all dynamics of life; in work, creativity, connections and relationships. We have the opportunity to embrace ourselves wholeheartedly, and the parts that come full circle, we have a choice to continue another cycle in comfort or fully accept an end to embrace the person you are becoming.

When did you stop hiding your pain and start using it as power?
Vulnerability and honesty is such a strength. To be able to have emotional intelligence, to slow down and embrace the depth of feelings/emotions and the turmoil of mind and balance them to alchemize your pain into light and peace within yourself is a powerful way to live your life. Most of my life, I have weathered storms to a degree where I had a belief that giving up was never an option. To always persist because there is always a way through. The storm does not last forever and calm waters will return. When you are able to confront your pain, hold space for it without guilt, shame, or punishment. To be vulnerable, honest and express this with those you trust (including self) shows you have strength and resilience. Your pain doesn’t diminish another’s pain, there is no such competition. You can have compassion and empathy for yourself and others. To hold space for this depth of painful truths and be an example. When you are able to alchemize your pain and difficult experiences to enhance your life shows your courage and inner power. I have been able to confront deeper truths about myself, dynamics, beliefs and take accountability for my choices and turn this into opportunities. Opportunity of releasing old beliefs, letting go of harmful habits, ideologies, connections, environments and have the courage to trust the unknown and choose myself from a place of integrity, love and self respect. To feel the difficult emotions, allow them their place to feel and to release. This is a challenging process as each experience is not the same but gives you an opportunity to learn more about yourself and realize the courage and inner strength you possess. Your pain can be one of your greatest teachers in this life. The path I have walked leading to this present moment has been filled with challenges and situations I had to survive. Where it felt like there was no choice but to keep moving through and onward. I am grateful to have overcome them and transmute these painful experiences into who I am today. I am grateful to have never given up on myself and those around me that I chose the responsibility to care for. Although many circumstances were unfortunate events, I never gave up and saw it through in the best ways I could at those times knowing that in future everything will work out in the best way. The pain lasted years and I still work through this today. It has taught me emotional intelligence, patience, trust in self, creating a solid foundation within, peace within and leading with integrity, honesty and to stand by my values in every aspect of my life. Equipping me with skills and tools I can apply for the rest of my life. With every set back, perceived challenge/failure or falling down I have the courage to always get back up knowing this is an opportunity to learn. To apply previously known knowledge and have the courage, passion and agility to stand firm and see this through. To rise above adversity. I am honored to have the courage to keep going as I come from people who are resilient and survived many difficulties for me to be here today. To embody this spirit from those who came before me helps me to honor them. You can transform your pain into the light you posses within, to shine brighter and to be more of the authentic you. You have the ability to shine bright, and transforming the darkness of your pain into light is a gift you can give yourself. To be an example that your perceived challenges, setbacks and pain do not define you.

Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What important truth do very few people agree with you on?
That love is the universal truth. Love is so abundant in many forms. It’s connected to us all. An energy that uplifts and is so important to embody but also share. I see love as light. It takes you out of darkness. It’s important to navigate life from and with a love ethic. It sets a foundation of safety for yourself and others to be in this way and navigate all dualities of life. We are all worthy and enough for love in all of its forms. Love is deeper than just within your heart, it shines within your soul. I believe part of the gift of life is to evolve and experience the many ways love exists and how it transforms you within. As when we leave this world we take nothing with us but our memories in our souls. All the love that was experienced and shared transmutes. Love is never wasted. We are all connected to an energy and I believe in the powerful light of love.

Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. Have you ever gotten what you wanted, and found it did not satisfy you?
I will admit yes, but this taught me deeper truths. I have wished and desired for many things in my life. Some of these wants came to fruition in time and others immediately. With impatience, the desires that came immediately were not as great as I had hoped. Going against the flow, only relying on mind and the idea of what I thought I wanted shown that it was not the truth at heart. In patience and time, some of these things I wanted before came to fruition over time in the best way I could not have possibly imagined before. With the lack of patience and the illusion of control, some of the wants that came to fruition quickly fell short of what could have been if I chose a different way. To trust in myself and the unknown, it may have been a different outcome. There has also been a truth of having patience and the want coming to fruition in time. Although I am very grateful for the wants that came to be, I realize at times when they arrive I have outgrown this version of myself. I am still grateful and thankful things manifested. Although dissatisfied it surprised me. I took pause to reflect. It didn’t feel or bring what I thought it would. Then I realized that the version of myself that wanted this prior no longer moves from this place. That I have outgrown this want and helped me reflect and listen within to what it truly is I want moving forward. Although a perceived setback or disappointment, there is still truth there and an opportunity to learn. The universe works in mysterious ways. When we are in a state of surrender when it comes to our wants and desires and trusting the unknown, what you initially wanted can come to fruition in ways that honour you and better than you could have possibly imagined before. Trust in self, surrender to the unknown and continue to be open to learning another way along your journey. You’ll be surprised at what you thought you wanted could happen in the best way.
