We’re looking forward to introducing you to Ron’Netta . Check out our conversation below.
Hi Ron’Netta , thank you so much for joining us today. We’re thrilled to learn more about your journey, values and what you are currently working on. Let’s start with an ice breaker: Have any recent moments made you laugh or feel proud?
I recently landed my first LEAD role. I will be starring as Michelle Cole a.k.a. DJ Pretty Black in the upcoming feature film COUSINS. The project is currently in filming status & highlights the life of a DJ whose cry for justice following her cousin’s murder leads to a plot for revenge. Being cast to lead this film makes me proud.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I have a Bachelors Degree in Registered Nursing & often tell people the nursing is an act, like a role I play. My true gift and profession is as an actress & author. I have self-published three novels & am working on a fourth in my spare time when not acting, I am also a screenwriter of an episode of a sitcom.
My journey is unique because I work a full-time job & also consider myself a full-time actress because when I am not nursing, I am studying scripts, on set filming, or in acting classes & workshops.
I spend my hour subway commute to work & back studying scripts.
Although, I have not hit the big leagues yet, I feel very accomplished.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who were you before the world told you who you had to be?
I have always been an actress at heart before the world gave me a reality check. The bills started coming & nursing was a way to pay the bills. Nursing has never been a passion. As a little girl, I never put bandaids on baby dolls or nursed them back to health. I memorized poetry and literary works to later recite & act out. The pressures of the world pushed me into the nursing profession for the purposes of providing a comfortable life for my family & I.
What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
The defining wound of my life was an unexplained stroke in 2017. For a while, it felt unreal. There were so many things I had to reconquer like walking. I have no visible physical deficits. Some may say I bounced back 100%. I give myself about a 98% bounce-back rate because 2% of me feels that I am a little less ambitious than before due to being self-conscious. Although I am fully functional & no one can tell by looking at me or talking to me that I had a traumatic brain injury in the past, I still feel self-conscious at times. Kind of like there’s a mark on my head that has a big “S” for stroke on it. Due to self-consciousness, certain endeavors I was ambitious enough for pre-stroke seem unrealistic now although I know fully well I am capable. I am healing from the affliction of self-consciousness by positive self talk. I AM ENOUGH!
Sure, so let’s go deeper into your values and how you think. Whose ideas do you rely on most that aren’t your own?
I really rely on my mother’s advice for most things. We speak at least once a day if not two or three times. The one piece of advice I didn’t listen to was that I shouldn’t divulge to the public about my stroke. She saw somewhere that when some other actress had a stroke, the industry stop casting her.
I choose to be transparent to show others that where there’s a will there’s a way. I am who I am and that stupid little stroke ain’t stopping shit!
Before we go, we’d love to hear your thoughts on some longer-run, legacy type questions. If you knew you had 10 years left, what would you stop doing immediately?
I would stop being concerned about what others think of me and I’d learn how to say no more. I’m a people-pleaser. Especially for family. I’d let all the self-consciousness go which would allow me to live a carefree life. This is a weird question. I do not want to put a date on my lifespan or even think of “that day”. I plan to live until at least 101. LOL
