We recently had the chance to connect with Jose Vargas Zapata and have shared our conversation below.
Jose , we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What do you think others are secretly struggling with—but never say?
It’s heartbreaking to think about the struggles people face in silence. Many are battling depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues, often feeling isolated or ashamed. Your presence and willingness to listen can be a reason of hope.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m Jose Vargas Zapata, founder of JVZ Ministries. Our mission is to transform youth, heal families, and restore hope through mentorship, emotional support, and spiritual guidance. With a background as a former gang leader and inmate, I’m passionate about helping young people overcome challenges and achieve their full potential.
Our organization offers tailored mentorship programs, life coaching, and family support to empower youth with the skills, discipline, and confidence they need to succeed. We’re dedicated to making a positive impact in Boston and beyond.
Thanks for sharing that. Would love to go back in time and hear about how your past might have impacted who you are today. What’s a moment that really shaped how you see the world?
One moment that really shaped how I see the world is when I realized the impact of kindness and compassion in someone’s life. Through my experiences as a chaplain and life coach, I’ve seen firsthand how a listening ear and a supportive presence can transform someone’s perspective and give them hope. It’s taught me the importance of empathy and understanding in breaking down barriers and building connections with others.
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
If I could say one kind thing to my younger self, it would be: You’re doing better than you think you are, and your story is still being written. Keep pushing forward, because your resilience and strength will carry you through the darkest moments, and your heart is capable of incredible love and compassion.
Next, maybe we can discuss some of your foundational philosophies and views? Is the public version of you the real you?
The public version of me is just a curated representation, a snapshot of who I am and what I want to share with the world. Behind the scenes, I’m still figuring things out, growing, and learning, just like everyone else. I’m multifaceted, and my true self is a complex mix of strengths, weaknesses, doubts, and passions.
Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. When do you feel most at peace?
Prayer can be a powerful way to connect with something greater than ourselves, find solace, and cultivate a sense of inner peace. For many people, prayer is a way to express gratitude, seek guidance, or find comfort in times of uncertainty. It’s a personal and intimate practice that can bring a sense of calm and clarity.
As a chaplain, I’ve had the privilege of supporting others in their prayer lives and spiritual journeys. I’ve seen how prayer can be a source of strength, hope, and healing for many people.
