We recently connected with JOHN MEDINA and have shared our conversation below.
JOHN, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my family. From an early age I watched my Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles work really hard. It was part of our culture. I was taught that no one owned you anything, you had to work for it. At around 12 years old I started working on a sportfishing boat in San Pedro, CA. We started at 5am and ended at 5pm. It was long days and hard work. I learned so many valuable lessons on that boat that are still relevant to this day in my daily life. I am grateful to all of these people that were positive role models to me when I was most impressionable.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My company is John Medina Buys Houses and we are based in San Pedro, CA. We are a family owned Real Estate Investment business. I started fixing and flipping houses in the Los Angeles area in 2012 . In 2017 I partnered with Ricky Magana, he is the Acquisitions Manager. Since then we have expanded our business to wholesaling, fix and flipping, rentals, Airbnb and listing properties. We buy houses nation wide and are focused on exceptional customer service. Our team members are a valuable part of our company. We all operate from a set of core values that helps us stay focused on our mission of doing the right thing. My wife Yvette is the Lead Designer of all of our flip projects. She does a great job picking all of the finishes and coordinating all of the subs contactors. After every closed transaction we donate a portion of our proceeds to local charities. It is our mission to make sure we are helping the people of our communities who need it the most.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Looking back I thing the 3 qualities that were the most impactful for me on my journey are hard work, persistence and faith. I started my journey as an entrepreneur as a plumbing contractor at age 24. I only had a real job for about 5 years. The reason why I become successful is because I stayed true to these qualities. My advice to anyone who is looking to succeed as an entrepreneur is to work hard and know “why”. Knowing why you are doing something will get you through the tough times. Have persistence to keep going when you feel like quitting. Being an entrepreneur isn’t easy and not for everyone. By having faith in what you are doing and trusting in God to handle all of the unknown will help you control what you can control.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did for me was giving unconditional love and support. To list everything they did for me would be a 1000 page book of examples. They supported me and were always a positive voice when I was pursuing my dreams. They lead by example and gave me a strong foundation to build on. I am truly grateful of there love and support.
