We recently connected with J. Daee Lesly Alcantar and have shared our conversation below.
J. Daee, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
We love this question! We are both children from immigrant parents. And we both have had to navigate our parents high expectations they have for us while staying true to ourselves AND not disappoint them all at the same time. Also, having to watch our parent’s work tirelessly in a country that did not value them and continues to not value them as immigrant workers. This has really motivated both of us to show up the way we do in and out of the workplace. We value tremendously our parents sacrifices and hard work and what do right by them.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Homo in Training is a variety show podcast that changes every week! We rotate between our Thotful Moment, Am I the A-Hole submissions and our Science sh*t! Our THOughTful Moment is where we discuss certain issues that impact our every day life with other guests or just the hosts. Our Am I The A-hole segment is just audience submitted questions about things they did in their life and need advice on if they did the right things or not, we also pull questions from the depths of reddit. Our Science Sh*t segment is where Jay breaks down his favorite science facts about the universe, biology or history.
The most exciting part of our variety podcast is how we can change topics anytime we want. Since our inception we’ve had segments about movie explanations, dissecting certain songs even reviewing some of our favorite tv shows. This format allows us the ability to change it up whenever we want. It’s exciting because we are not put into a box, if we hate something we can take it out and always give the audience something new so they never get bored. We don’t necessarily follow a structure with our podcast. Which really allows us to be creative and run free with our ideas. The loose format of the show gives us the opportunity to have guests of from all walks of life open up to us and have conversations they never thought they would.
What is new with Homo in Training? Everything we do is new! Like we stated earlier, our podcast is constantly changing and we always welcome feedback from our listeners.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It’s hard just to find 3 qualities when there is so many that skills that we have acquired on this journey. The main one that we feel have helped the most, is our love of knowledge. Not in the academic sense but when we created this show we didn’t know about audio recording, social media management, how to conduct interview efficiently and don’t get me started on audio engineering!
These things were huge learning curves for us but we wanted to learn how to do those things. Keep in mind, wanting isn’t enough. You need to be willing to put in the work. We’ve had to step out of our comfort zone in many areas and it was uncomfortable. But now it’s not scary for us anymore.
Our advice for folks is that you should always enter any new situation with optimism and excitement. Never fear. Although fear is the first thing to pop into most people’s mind, you need to transform that into an opportunity to learn something new. There will be many setbacks, but you need to be excited and willing to take those on in strife. Will it be hard? Yes. Will you mess up? YES. But did you have fun? ABSOLUTELY!
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Uh.. YES!!! We would to collaborate with more queer, latinx voices because it we have that lived experience, so it’s nice to see other viewpoints of people who identify as we do.
However, that doesn’t mean we are closed to off to anyone who doesn’t identify with those terms. We open our doors to any one of any background, race or gender. We love people who want to have an honest fruitful conversation.
We pride ourselves on having real, raw, authentic dialogue about issues and we look for that vulnerability in our guests. We have interviewed so many different kinds of people. Anywhere from health care professions to sex workers and everything in between.
We try very hard to be inclusive regardless of ethnicity or sexual orientation. If you have a different point of view we want to hear it! We can be reached by email or a quick DM to our social media accounts.
